John Coltrane - on religion

John Coltrane quote: "I believe in all religions."

Reggie Workman played bass for Coltrane. I used to work for his sister. Only met him once, but such an amazing presence.

All the folks I met from the John Coltrane circle, were truly amazing people...all filled with a great deal of peace and love.

well, you know, if you listen to Gregorian Chant and feel the beauty there, you have everything that exists in religion.

The mind and the constructions it makes in ideas is a referencing abstraction from reality. It is not the reality itself.

If you go to a soup kitchen and hand a bowl of soup to some poor, elderly suffering person...religion is right there.

Writing an article about that experience is removed from the direct reality.

I generally agree in your meditative sentences, but nevertheless, writings of religious experiences of everything is exactly what you can read about in my links.

You are obviously a very very intelligent person. I am just saying, you know, allow yourself to, you know, enjoy Pavarotti singing Ave Maria a bit. That is also religion...

My mother was a coloratura, I am a little biased as regards opera.

Thanks a lot :)
Well, if I am, I only can thank my mother-inherited sensitive mind and my personal religious/mythical experiences for this :)

"God beyond God", I believe is how Meister Eckhart spoke of this. One of my favorite quotes from Eckhart goes, "I pray God make me free of God, so that I may know God in his unconditioned being".

Add to this what Alan Watts said, "Buddhist simile: The doctrine is like a finger pointing at the moon, and one must take care not to mistake the finger for the moon. Too many of us, I fear, suck the pointing finger of religion for comfort, instead of looking where it points."

Short clip of Reggie Workman (one of Coltrane's bass players) tearing up as he talks about the beauty in Art Blakey's music...
