Joining the Ramadan Fast

Hej peeps ^^,

I can hereby (eagerly) announce that this year will be the first time that I will join more than a billion Muslims in fasting for the Ramadan and will do my very best to make it all the way through. There are several reasons why I finally decided to join this year, the most important one being that one of my close friends (a Turkic Muslim) was talking about it and made me and my friends extremely curious. Since he is the only Muslim in our friend group and thus would be the only one who would participate, me, my girlfriend and her best friend decided to support him both mentally and physically by joining him (although I am pretty sure we will need the mental and physical support .-.). This means we will start tomorrow (the 6th of June) and finish fasting on the 5th of July.

I am really looking forward to it and hope to hear from you guys! ^_^

All tips are welcome (and prolly really needed..)

Depending on where you live, you might well have chosen the most difficult Ramadan possible due to the timing around the Summer solstice. 20+ hours for parts of Northern Europe. If you had waited another 15 years, and moved to Finland, you could have simply fasted between brunch and lunch instead :D

Hopefully you are nice and close to the equator.

Make sure you plan your pre-dawn meal properly. Things like porridge (oats or rice), eggs in any form (omelettes with potatoes/meat/veg) are good as they release energy more slowly and (depending on you) are relatively easy to eat in large-ish quantities at 2am.

Make sure you are super hydrated too, a sports drink or 2 in the morning might help. I tried it for one day once, not eating is easy enough, the not drinking is the hard bit.

Good luck though. All the best

Hey Nyx, I hope you enjoy this experience :)

Let's see, fasting include no eating or drinking, no ejaculating by any intentional means and no sex, all during the day. There is also what "damages" fasting without breaking it, and that includes any bad deeds (according to Islam) like lying, profanity, watching pornography, hurting others, and some others.

Keep in mind that when need and necessity present themselves, there is no shame to break fasting, although commended to withstand it and continue fasting if one sees it can be done without causing harm.

I'm saying this just for the info in case you maybe decide to have it as close to original as possible only. No pressure intended ;)

By the way, I suggest you ask around first if fasting hours are extremely long. Some views went to take the hours of Makkah in places with extremely long hours.

Remember, holding back in what you like only makes it feel better once you can do it again. Food never tasted better outside Ramadan for me :)

20+ hours for parts of Northern Europe.

I'm lucky, it's only 15 hours for me this year :D

I have been fasting for about 2 months, for weight loss and mental discipline. I don't eat for 12-14 hours, but I do drink water. Once a week I don't fast. I hope to make this a lifetime habit. :)

Both no food or water. Even fasting all year long (15 hours day) with only no food doesn't compare to it :D

Yea that's true, no water is very hard. I did that once for two weeks, no food and water 18 hours a day, but then I said screw it and caved. :p

I urge you to continue fasting for the year, at least 12-14 hrs/day. Keep your daily caloric intake to 2000 or 2500 (if you're active) and I promise you will be quite thin within a year.
