Jumping in Head First

Hello, everyone. Obviously, I am the new kid here, but I have been reading threads for a little while. There is one thing I have noticed that seems to be common to most threads. It seems that a large amount of people are very hateful and intolerant toward anyone who disagrees with them. This seems to me to be counterproductive, if you are looking to have a true discussion about anything. Not only do you make yourself out to be a jerk, but you undermine your own position, by appearing to be afraid to be wrong, forcing you to attack others. Hearts and minds can only ever be changed or informed when civility and a sincere search for the truth are staples on both sides.

In all my posts, regardless of subject, I will do my absolute best to treat all people and all positions with respect and dignity. I will not insult you if you disagree with me, I will try to understand your position. If I do not agree with you, I will posit a reasoned, respectful refutation of your position. I ask only that you extend me the same courtesy. Together, we can all attain a deeper understanding of the truths of the world.

Welcome and I agree that such can be discussed and debated with civility, but on the other hand, when did people not act in such manners that would indicate emotional frustration from time to time in a discussion/debate ? :)

Tolerant Believer, I certainly agree with you and I hope I never give you reason to feel uncomfortable.

Greetings

Welcome to RF. I agree with your position on diplomacy in debates. But surely you can see the humour that can be gained from a vocal extremist with no tolerance for anyone else argueing a point against 3 other people who are calm and respectful. Just puts the person in disrepute and shows them for what they are: intolerant.

I hope, however, our discussions and debates contain no such behavior :)

I think I'm going to like you, Tolerant Believer. But then I'm not all that surprised. I see you're Catholic. Nice folks, most of them. Welcome to RF!
