I'm a beginner at this, so please correct any misunderstandings and fill in any gaps you might see. This is just a very basic sketch to get things started.
The Basic division Jung made in the psyche is the division between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind, with the subconscious mind in between. Ego is the term used as the core of conscious thought, which interacts between the objective reality outside the individual and the subjective consciousness within the individual. The interface ego uses for the objective world is The Persona. The interface ego uses for the subconscious (personal unconscious mind) is called The Shadow, which can project the negativity contained with the unconscious mind onto others in attempt to bring the problem into consciousness. The Shadow is of the same gender as you are.
Lurking beneath The Shadow is is a man's "inner woman" called The Anima, or a woman's "inner man," called The Animus. It is usually Anima/Animus projection that causes one to "fall in love."
It has been said that this is about as far as the ego can go when it comes to consciousness, so this is the line between the Personal Unconscious and the Collective Unconscious.
The Collective Unconscious is non-individual, suprapersonal, and universal to humans. It's manifestations are alien to the ego--and can be considered to be divine or numinous.
Within the collective unconscious are complexes of related ideas clustered around a central core called an Archetypal image. Archetypes are much to the psyche as instincts are to the body--patterns of behavior common to a species that are innate and unlearned. In much the same manner that instincts drive biological behavior, so archetypes drive the psyche.
Four major Archetypes are the Archetype of the Great Mother, the Archetype of the Spiritual Father, the Archetype of Transformation, and the Central Archetype or The Self, which is the union of opposites.
So, cutting through the layers of the psyche from the outside in would be:
I'll start more basic threads as I learn more.
