To give those of you unaware of the Jussie Smollett case here is the following from Abc7:

At about 2 a.m. Tuesday, Smollett, 36, reported he was walking alone in the 300-block of East North Water Street when two people he didn't know started yelling racial and homophobic slurs at him, police said. He told Chicago police that the attackers yelled "MAGA country," Guglielmi said.

The article states later that "Smollet told police the attackers struck him in the face with their hands and poured a chemical on him. He told police one of the individuals wrapped a rope around his neck during the attack before they both ran away.

When Smollett contacted police at about 2:42 a.m. he was still wearing the rope around his neck, Guglielmi said. Chicago police plan to analyze the rope as part of their investigation. The chemical substance is believed to be bleach, but police had not independently tested his sweatshirt as of Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities are looking for any evidence or video from the area between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., as well as anyone who was near there at the time of the attack.

Smollett was able to make it to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Prior to the attack on Jan. 22, Smollett had received a letter threat sent to the FOX studio in Chicago which had threatening language and was laced with powdery substance, likely Tylenol.

The FBI is investigating that threat.

The actor confirmed to CNN's Don Lemon over the phone that the attack took place. Smollett said he fought back, and is shaken and angry that something like this could happen.

In "Empire," Smollett plays Jamal Lyon, who is gay. In real life, Smollett has also come out as gay. He has been on the FOX show since 2015."

Jussie Smollett faces felony charge for alleged false report of racist, homophobic attack

Jussie Smollett has been charged with falsely reporting that he was attacked in January. The Cook County, Illinois, state's attorney has filed a felony disorderly conduct charge against the actor, not long after the Chicago Police Department officially named Smollett "a suspect in a criminal investigation," according to a spokesperson.​

Police said earlier that filing a false police report is a Class 4 felony. Smollett could face prison time of one to three years if convicted and be forced to pay for the cost of the police investigation.

Detectives were to contact his legal team to negotiate a reasonable surrender for his arrest. The Associated Press said police do not have a time frame for how long Smollett would be given. "We are trying to be diplomatic and reasonable, and we're hoping he does the same," police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told AP.

CBS Chicago reports Smollett is expected in bond court Thursday afternoon.​

My impression....
It sounds like what an anti-Trumpette would imagine a pro-Trumper to say.
When I think of hate crimes, the perp doesn't announce their tribe.
If they make any commentary at all, it's abusive to the victim.

Now, before anyone cries "That's not proof!", I don't claim that it is.
Tis just my suspicion.

He's an actor, & skilled at pretending.
The field is rife with people of the type....
"Hey everybody...look at me, like me, feel for me!".

Add to this his penchant for lying (2007 conviction),
political orientation, bigotry, & his sense of victimhood.
So I think it had nothing to do with the TV show's ratings.

On Wednesday, Jussie Smollett was charged with falsifying a police report stating he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack.

The actor was arrested on the charge after surrendering to authorities, as INSIDER confirmed Thursday morning. A spokesman for Chicago police said Smollett staged the attack as a "publicity stunt," motivated by unhappiness with how much he was earning on Fox's popular TV series "Empire."

A "well-placed source" told HuffPost reporter Yashar Ali that Smollett was paid $65,000 per episode for his co-starring role on the most recent season of "Empire." On average, HuffPost notes, there are 18 episodes of "Empire" per season.

A Fox representative declined to comment on Smollett's compensation for "Empire."

No as Smollet's victim status is ideological while Trump's is personal. Trump, in my view, has some sort of paranoia issue as well.

Trump as he is POTUS just as an POTUS lying can do damage beyond that of a minor actor and failed screenwriter.
