Karma

I haven't given serious thought to karma in years, Maize. I have just the vaugest understanding of it as akin to "what goes around, comes around." Maybe Engyo or someone else can help me to understand it better? It seems to be a very important concept.

Since karma is a core Buddhist principle, and I am a practicing Buddhist, then my answer has to be Yes. How does it affect my life? Basically this is the explanation for what happens to a person, and for how their current choices (in thoughts, words, and actions) affect the future course of this lifetime and of future rebirths.

I'm gonna go a bit more indepth with the question... for those that believe anyway.

1) How exactly is your karma for your current life chosen?
2) Can karma that you act on someone else, but their karma determined it to be done to them, be returned onto you? (Like, the guy who squished the fly, comes back as a fly, and you just happen to be the guy who squishes him.)
3) Do you need to have 'perfect' karma to achieve nirvana/enlightenment? If my understanding is correct, and you don't need 'perfect' karma to achieve nirvana, the karma that gets you into human form is the 'best' type, correct? Allows you to study without distractions or something?

Most of those are based on (mahayana) buddhism, mainly because I don't know much about hinduism atm. But if you can share your thoughts Gerani, I'd appreciate it.

I agree in the idea of karma. For I believe that everything affects everything else. So to say that something I do will bring me bad karma, is like saying something I do will affect me in some way, negatively or positively, in the future.

I believe in a form of karma. I believe that I need to learn spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally in order to gain access to the next realm. Abusing or ignoring knowledge causes me to be pushed back, possibly into the realm below this one. Nothing is decided until I die, however, so if there is a way to make amends, and I do, then it's all good! :p

I can be reincarnated into any gender and any organism, as everything has lessons that need to be learned.

1) How exactly is your karma for your current life chosen?

At the end of my previous life I was reincarnated into the Otherworld. I had another lifetime there, while being able to review my past life. At the end of that life, I am judged by a "God" (which also can die, and reincarnate, in which case the new judge is decided by a comittee of the highest Gods). He deems one of three things. I am either ready for the next realm, not ready yet, or I need to be sent back a realm.

2) Can karma that you act on someone else, but their karma determined it to be done to them, be returned onto you? (Like, the guy who squished the fly, comes back as a fly, and you just happen to be the guy who squishes him.)

No because living things are not forced to do anything by karma, all living things have choice. Besides, a fly life isn't a punishment. Just new experiences.

3) Do you need to have 'perfect' karma to achieve nirvana/enlightenment?

No, but we must learn much, in order to reach the highest realm, the Source. Even then it is temporary, although not short.

If my understanding is correct, and you don't need 'perfect' karma to achieve nirvana, the karma that gets you into human form is the 'best' type, correct?

Not so, humans aren't the "best" form. All forms in this realm are equal, the only "better" forms are in the higher realms and the only worse forms are in the lower realms, in relation to us. Even they are better only because of what they have learned, and not because of specific forms.

I like the view of karma as a force that provides your soul with what it needs to learn in order to grow and develop. I don't look at karma as a reward/punishment concept. Your soul cannot escape learning the lesson karma is trying to teach you, you'll eventually get it.

Though I think a spiritual entity can choose to incorporate karma as part of their PURPOSE in a physical existence I do not believe it is mandatory or a popular choice since there really is no right or wrong in the way we understand it.
