Past societies would be shocked at how miserable small the nuclear family is. The rise of the nuclear family separated us from many of our traditional support systems. Traditionally we had those such as aunts and uncles and first cousins and grandparents in much closer proximity. But now that is limited and other communal resources for child rearing have been greatly diminished.Probably due to the erosion of the nuclear family and the tragic rise of latchkey children.
It's not that woman can't do the job, but those women that put careers above family as a priority.
At least until the children grow up they need at least one parent to properly rear and direct them ideally.
It's been a basis for stability in the past that now has consequences as both parents largely need to work in today's society leaving kids to essentially fend for themselves.
