Kids summer camp run by convicted child molester.

Just watched the news about an upscale, ($1200 a wk) summer camp in Maui, Hawaii. They found out the head counselor was using a fradulent name and that he was a convicted sexual offender. The kids had to go home and this guy has disappeared. They aren't even looking for him for he hasn't been charged with any crime in respect to these current children.

I came to find out that there is no mandatory, across the board background check or fingerprinting in some states. So this guy takes an alias and starts a kid's summer camp.

Looking forward to your input and perhaps guidance in following the right path , politically speaking, to rectify this situation. I mean how does the average citizen get involved to change legislature. This is very important for all of us, but I need someone to point me in the right direction in the political arena.

Convicted sex offenders (so's for short --nickname the system gives them) are required to register their names address and phone numbers with the local law enforcement of their area. As they are convicted felons so they have fingerprints on file. Within their parole or probation papers (after they get out if they receive time) are stipulation on how far they must be from schools and daycare. All living arrangements have to be pre-approved by the parole or probation officer and all employment as to be approved. Visits at their place of residence is mandatory (can't think of any exceptions) at least x amount of times per year. They are forbidden to view porn. They go through sex offender therapy and get tested on a regular basis including moniters in a lab setting to test their reactions to various stimuli. The internet is used post their picture and address (but not phone number). Any deviation from the set plan espcially failure to register is a quick trip back to pen after a court battle they are almost guarentted to lose. Failure to register is a felony in and of itself.

It probably isnt the system that dropped the ball..though need more info than what you provided to say that was assurity but I would say it was the camp who failed to use the resources avaliable to them including the internet friendly background check.

Also in a job like that fingerprints as a hiring requirement would have been reasonable.

Apparently fingerprints are not necessary in some states, according to the news report. This is why i ask for some sort of regulation, world wide, that would relegate responsibility to the organization that overseas these camps. They should institute the most rigorus testing of employees, in reference to the children's safety.

We logically think that there are safegaurds in place to protect the children. The truth is that we as a common world are soreley lacking in our duty to the children of this world. Don't forget the time when you were a child.
Life was bliss. Everything was a mystery. You were innocent. You were totally pure and innocent, depending upon the kindness of strangers. Who will be your Champion? Will it be your brothers and sisters of this world? Who will take up your cause my beloved children?

Sorry beloved for my zeal. It is just that I don't want any child subjected to any wrong thing, ever!!

Ya know we shouldn't have to worry about convicted child molesters doing that sorta thing cause they should be beaten with a stick, then smeared in honey and left in the middle of no where next to a fire ant hill and let those little guys bite the crap outta him till he dies from the shear pain of it.:woohoo:

You are right I didn't think about it. If they don't get incarcerated as a condition of the conviction they may not be fingerprinted. When I was typing it I was assuming they all did time but there are sex offenders who get felony probation...here in Tx ususually 10 years if that happens and they don't get fingerprinted. I never thought of that before.

Martha it is interesting what you said about childhood innocense. I remember reading a long long time ago a book by John Douglas ( i could be wrong on the which author) who is an FBI profiler and he one time saw a guy looking at children in an inappropiate way in the park so he took his child over near the man and said something to the effect of, "see that man over there? see the way he looks. that is bad if you see that tell a grownup". somthing like that can't remember exactly.

I worked for the probation department years after reading that and did one year in a office where we set-people up for their probation after their convictions. I met about two sex offenders a month maybe 2.5 And after about the 5-7th one I could tell which ones were so's before looking at their paperwork.

The reason is that they all acted very similar. All were very introverted and reserved. All of them could not keep there eyes off the children in the waiting room. The way they looked at kids was different too..impossible to explain but easy to spot. Rapist were the same way. They rarely ever got probation (unless they were rapist who picked up a misdeamnor after being off parole like DWI for instance.) ...rapist couldn't keep their eyes off of woman and they looked at them in a unique fashion.

It is impossible to explain in print but trainable for children. MIght sound far fetch but in SO training ..in their counciling classes they would hook them up to moniters and show them movies and register their breathing patterns and heart patterns during the movie...and many of them would automatically have increased heart rates when the movies showed some kid swimming in a swimming pool alone or such....and as sick as I am probably making you right now....there face changes too...sometimes..when they get aroused...I wonder how much legal friction to offer some of them a reduciton in sentence in exchange for filming their faces and showing them to kids in school as a learning tool? Just a hypothical.

The saddest thing I learned about SO's is that the probablity of changing their behavior is really minor. The success rate is very low. My ex gf was a genetics major in college and she put it to me this way...she said Robert, what are the chances of you now liking girls or me putting though thearpy to not like girls anymore.....I looked at her and said, probably impossible...she said well that is what the system is trying to do with Sex offenders every time they put one in therapy.
