Jesus Christ. In BrE this word is so offensive. I mean like it's up there with c*nt.
Over here it's just another word for "Limey", "drungo", "Aussie", or "Brit".
Of course, those are horribly offensive words too.

Even with dial-up modem, the internet was more useful back then. The signal-to-noise ratio has flipped and stretched.

Obscenities are odd, arbitrary things. I remember when "c**t" was no more offensive than "dick", both meaning "jerk" with "a**h***" being the gender neutral. But then recently "c**t" came to be considered a very misogynist word. Words like "twat", "bollocks", and "wanker" are less offensive here in the U.S., too, but only because they're not widely use and sound like innocuous nonsense words to those unfamiliar with the terms. And it's funny how "f***" is offensive and "screw" is not, even though they're synonyms. Same with "s***" and "poop", etc. Another funny fact. As you know "fanny" in the UK is slang for vagina, but in the U.S. it's just an innocuous word for "butt". Wacky.
