Kind of Bad News, Kind of Good News

Bad News:

My extended family (uncles and grandparents on my mothers side), are going through severe financial difficulties. They live in P.E.I. at present, and work as loggers, however, they can't get enough money anymore. They're selling a lot of their stuff, and looking for other jobs.

Good News:

They might move up here with me!!! Wow! At least one of my uncles is looking for something, and my grandmother likes it here (When she visited, her arthritus went away due to the dry air). The only problem is my grandfather. Ever since he was sixteen, he's worked, and he intends to keep going till' the end. Oh, and the fact that jobs are somewhat scarce here. Hopefully, they will move up though! :jiggy:

:woohoo:

I'm sorry to hear about their situation, but I hope it will be beneficial in the long run. Moving closer to family can be very nice, espeically since you get to connect with more people more often.

My grandfather will never stop "working" either. His like 87, and just last month he tore his shoulder lifiting cement blocks for his neighbor. He said, "I wanted to help him make his new walkway." I don't think he'll ever learn that his body can't do that anymore.

I hope all goes well with the family. Don't worry about grandpa. He sounds like the kind of fellow who will find something to do no matter where he is.

I have to thank you for this post. I did not know exactly where you live, and I had no clue as to where P.E.I was. I went to the net and looked up your town Iqaluit, Nunavut. Holy mackeral! I found out so much info on your town and especially Prince Edward Island. I had no idea that the author of my favorite PBS show, Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery, was from P.E.I. Truly very interesting.

You said that your kin are loggers, but it seemed to me upon reading, that P.E.I. is mostly a farming place. Was the logging industry big there? What has happened to the industry in that area? It must be very difficult for a family who has known mostly one way of life, to change and learn another way to sustain themselves. You said jobs are scarce in your area. What kind of jobs or industry is in your area?

Are you of Irish or Scottish decent or are you of the First Nation people? Sorry for all of the questions, but after reading all of that info, my curiosity got the best of me. A friend of mine lives in Newfoundland, she is a goofie Newfie she says. She said that where she lives you can go out your back door and flash the Moose and not have to worry about another person seeing you! Sounds like just the place for me!:) Am I correct in saying that you have about six hours of light at this time of the year?

Sorry for babbling on, Druidus. Thanks again for this post that inspired me to learn about your part of the world

Joyfully,
Martha

It is. They worked on contract, mainly for clearing areas for development, but no one needs it that much anymore.

No, it was never really big there.

You said jobs are scarce in your area. What kind of jobs or industry is in your area?
We don't really have a set industry here. There's no natural resources or anything. There used to be a silver mine, but it proved unprofitable. We have mainly tertiary and quaternary jobs here, although there are some primary and secondary.

Are you of Irish or Scottish decent or are you of the First Nation people?
European stew. Irish (mostly Irish), Scottish, French, English. We come from the Mac Aoighd (Mackey) Clan, the Gaulton family, and the Bennet family (we would have four, but my great grandmother married her cousin ;))

I was born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland.

I haven't counted, but yes, we do have relatively little right now. Of course, there is an oddity... We are getting more light now (much more) than a few years back, and we also have new insects, like wasps and bees. In the summer there isn't much dark though, which balances it off.

Should I post some pictures of here?

Funny story I just remembered. My grandfather, the one who will be staying in P.E.I., covers his garbage with a blanket, in order to ward off crows. The ravens we have here (smartest birds in the world) would take the blanket, use it for nesting material, then carry away the garbage, after ripping it all over your driveway. :D lol

I've seen ravens working together with the dogs in town in order to access food they couldn't get without eachother. They are really quite smart.

*cackles* I love ravens, even if they make fun of me, sometimes. They're wonderful teachers, spiritually.

I was wondering about logging in PEI Druidus . :) The logging industry in the Maritimes is pretty much a thing of the past I'm afraid . :( I do hope the best for you and your family .

Ravens . What can I say ?

Best of luck to you and yours, Druidus. Your grandfather sounds like my Pop...even after he retired, he never really did.

Thanks for answering my questions, luv, truly enlightening. I am of Scotts, Irish background. My Da was born in a small town called Nitshil Scotland and my mom's people were from Ireland. I am a McGuire, born in Toledo, Ohio. I must say there is nothing more beautiful than hearing the sound of a Scottish brogue tripping off the tongue, not to mention the sound of the pipes and drums, eh laddie!

May you and your family be blessed with prosperity and happiness always. Hopefully your grandpa will live out his life doing whatever he damn well pleases, I get the feeling that is just what he will do! Blessings to him. Keep us posted on what happens in future.
Regarding pictures of where you live, yes please do post some if you can. I would love to see them.

Joyfully,
Martha

Dear kreeden, Burd is so handsome. How lovely that you have gained his confidence, it is evidenced in the closeup picture of him. Tell him Martha says Hi, and give him an extra helping of food from me.:)
