It seems like most of the posters here act like know it alls. Alot of childish bickering and obsessive nonsensical debating. It definitely takes away from this website.

Seems to me like some of the posters on this website are quite intelligent and have good knowledge of certain subjects. But know it all nah I've never come across one here.

Well, maybe one or two think they know it all, but I've never met any that actually does... but I dare say that's normal in any large crowd.

I find most members are quite knowledgeable on one or two topics, though. We've all got an area of expertise.

This makes me think about the art of writing and how we teach others to write.

I recall multiple instances where writing instructors taught the importance of a style and tone that avoids wishy-washy language.

Thus, is the appearance of know-it-all the product of how we are taught to write, or reflective of the personality of the writer?

One must be cautious in assumptions.

Some posters are like that, although having seen a lot of forums and social media over the years, it seems a relatively common phenomenon existent in most forums. It's hard to get away from, the internet know it all.

But when you realize that Mr. Know It All is actually this guy, there doesn't appear to be much point in bickering.

I find that many posters have emotional reactions to debate and a litany of grievances regarding being asked to support their claims or being disagreed with. I'd say it detracts from the site, but that's just as educational as debate, albeit in a different way.

Also, there's a fair amount of the Dunning-Kruger syndrome displayed here, but not in the form you suggest - an overinflated sense of one's own knowledge. What I see are not people claiming false equivalence because they think they're better at critical thinking than they are, but doing so because they don't know what that is or what it can do. You can recognize such people when they say, "That's just your opinion" about something that is demonstrably correct.

I have seen a lot of people who think their opinion is a fact. If that's what you're referring to, I get it. Some are indeed know-it-alls, awhile others just assume that everyone knows it's just their opinion, and are tired of prefacing everything with 'in my opinion'. In my opinion.

You could always ask about how they know what they write and see if their argument holds water. If they can present a good one, it might be oneself that misunderstood something or maybe they might have missed certain things or perspectives and so forth. There can be many reasons why people believe they are correct, obviously, the most common one is because we don't know it if we are, but believe so. Humans tend to be pretty bad at holding beliefs that we don't really think are true.

There is nothing wrong in asking someone for clarification of where they got certain knowledge from and then question that.
