Hehe. I was pretty much wondering if anyone on these forums practices any form of martial arts. Be it wrestling, boxing, or the all-powerful shaolin kungfu :) , what form(s) do you practice? Also, while your at it, why do you practice them?

I myself am self-taught for the most part. I've pretty much picked up moves and techniques from all over the place (mostly books, friends, and the occasional teacher) and use them all together. The different styles I've drawn from are Karate (I'm not sure which specific form), Boxing, TaeKwondo, Kyusho-Jitsu, Wrestling, Eastern Mantis KungFu (very small amount), and Gracie Ju-Jitsu.

I practice these for four reasons: One, to keep myself in shape, two, to defend myself in case I am attacked, and three, to injure or incapacitate someone that is attacking me with the intent to wound/kill.

So is there anyone else?

I don't practice any martial arts, but when I was much younger I took self-defense classes with a Judo instructor. We learned a lot of good techniques, mostly for escaping an attacker. I especially liked learning how to "throw" someone. Those techniques have helped me at least twice in my life. One time was when some punk thought he was going to mug me and steal my purse. He couldn't get away fast enough. Another time was when someone tried to get in my car with me. You just never know.

I studied tae kwon do for 5 years, aikido for 4 and jujutsu for about 10 and still study today. I played with wing chun for about 9 months.

I was interested in the self-defense aspects at first but now do it because I see how much of a positive impact it has on older people who have done it for a long while. It is the one of the few phycial activites that has a signifigant number of seniors partipaitng in it.

I realized that as I got older I need a health plan to stay in shape and that I would have a larger interest in one that I had an intellectual and physical interest in.

Because it is an activity that is studied it is much easier to stay in long term as opposed to jogging, weight lifting or team sports which have a much small amount of info to ingest and thus loose their intellectual appeal much quicker. Just as important the physical skills used in martial arts have a high carry-over rate into non-martial activies and I use them while driving, jogging, wrestling (goof off wrestilng), carry heavy things at work anything that is eye-hand coordinated oriented. Most sports have very few carry-over skils other than the most general of skills.

The self-defense holds an invisble value in the confidence it creates that is readable to those around you. I believe (I can't know since it didn't happen) that I have avoided a number of confrontations in the past by being laid-back but confident....about my hand to hand skills..something I would not have presentedi If I was not trained. The fact that I have a plan ahead of time is a consideratble asset to have and trainng has given me options other than fist cuffing with the only one I had in the last 5 years plus was taking away a carkeys from a drunk with a wrist lock as opposed to fist fighting him or letting him drive off.

The camardierie that martial artist sometimes have rival fraterniteis, and many social societies and in my personal observation far exceed most churches, and clubs in existance. I have a brother or sister in the arts where ever I go and vice versa to those coming to my city.

I am a Kyo Sa (Instructor) and an E-Dan (Second Degree Black Belt), in the International Tang Soo Do Federation and and have been studying for almost 10 years, and teaching for around 3. I've also studied tae kwon do (moo duk kwan school, and chung moo kwan school), aikido, hapkido, kickboxing, wing chun, cuong nu, ninjutsu, and many weapons [mostly ee jul bong (nunchakus) or kum do (sword)]. I was on the pittsburgh sparring team at the 8th World Tang Soo Do Championships last August in Florida. And we won, for the first time in like 10 years. I also do freestyle martial arts. The best kick I can do is the jack knife (540 outside inside kick followed by a back wheel kick in the air.) I am also working on the 720 round kick, and 720 back wheel kick. I train with the grandmaster of the International Tang Soo Do Federation Master Chun Sik Kim. Martial arts has pretty must defined my life. And I think that everyone and anyone should take atleast one martial art in their lifetime. Not just for the self defense, but the confidence, discipline, respect, and overall fun of it.

I've been studying taekwondo (ATA) and I'm pretty new to it. I'm about 7 months away from my first degree black belt. I really enjoy it! :D
