Be angry, cry, punch a wall, go spank it to your favorite politician, I don't really care. But at least show some respect for the people that died, give them 24 hours before we turn them into political fodder? Thats all I am suggesting.
I agree.

During prohibition yes and up to the 60's iirc. Before they switched to other firearms.
Prohibition ended in 1933. The ban went into effect in 1934. So the use of Tommy guns during the prohibition can't exactly be used as evidence that the ban didn't work.

Obviously the ban wouldn't work overnight. It would take time for the numbers of guns to go down and the price to become too exorbitant. We don't really hear of their use now-a-days, and yet you think the ban was ineffective. It's possible that other reasons caused them to lose favor with the criminal organizations but I'm not sure you can dismiss the effect of the ban as having no effect.

From you own source:
[QUOTEA study from the Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy counts only 300 "relevant federal and state laws regarding the manufacture, design, sale, purchase, or possession of guns." The key word is "relevant."
...
According to the Brookings Institution, the reference to 20,000 gun laws first appeared in Congressional testimony in 1965, but no source was given. The number has taken hold in the public consciousness, however. In 1981, the authors note, President Reagan rejected a call for additional gun legislation, saying, "There are today more than 20,000 gun control laws in effect -- federal, state and local -- in the United States."
It doesn't support the idea that there are 20,000 gun laws.[/QUOTE]

In fact the number is higher. But lets say there are 10,000 or 5,000, or 4,000 gun laws. Oh I know what will stop those ISIS guys and mad shooters of other designs! Lets add a 1000 gun laws, man that will stop em !. WHAT IGNORANCE! What naivety that is! Adding more useless laws is the same thing as adding more laws against pot or trying to stop booze consumption! How did that work? Naive because gun control advocates are so blind they cant see that kind of stupidity only helps the politicians get their vote.

Here is another site apparently no one knows the EXACT number of gun laws but I would bet anyone with two to one odds there are at least 20k laws on the books;

HOW MANY GUN LAWS ARE ON THE BOOKS?

No one knows how many laws there are in the United States. Apparently, no one can count that high.

They’ve been accumulating, of course, for more than 200 years. When federal laws were first codified in 1927, they fit into a single volume. By the 1980s, there were 50 volumes of more than 23,000 pages.

And today? Online sources say that no one knows. The Internal Revenue Code alone, first codified in 1874, contains more than 3.4 million words and, if printed 60 lines to the page, is more than 7,500 pages long. There are about 20,000 laws just governing the use and ownership of guns.

They were used during prohibition by gangs. This is what caused them to be banned in 1934. They continued to use them after they was banned. So yes banning did not work.

It took almost 30 years after they was banned before they stopped being used. Not an efficient strategy I would say.

Were they used as often in the 60s as the 30s? Was it a slow decline? I think less crime being committed is a win, even if that doesn't ever reach zero crime being commited.

As far as 30 years being too long to get guns off the street, what is the alternative? Doing nothing, and allowing them to stay on the street forever? Sometimes fixes require long term planning.

Crime didn't decrease because of the ban. They just used other weapons. Tommy gun doesn't make a better criminal, in fact the case could be made it worse for criminals considering how inaccurate the firearm can because it being 1. full automatic 2. .45 caliber. This cause tremendous barrel rise and loss of accuracy with each shot. But anyways, thats another topic. Ending prohibiton of alchohol reduced crime, but it already gave organized crime a foothold on the world so the damage was already done to society.

Honestly I don't know the answer. I am big on gun control laws and that certain people should not be allowed to own firearms.

So the question is how do we prevent someone who is not allowed or supposed to have firearms, not have firearms? The only answer i can think of is to crack down harder on the black market. Which is like trying to kill an ant colony by squishing the ants with a paper clip. Its pretty much useless.

You previous link quoted that study, and it does not state there are 20,000 gun laws.
Do you not read sources before using them?

Yes I read the links do you never make a mistake? And what does that have to do the fact we are saturated in gun laws and that more laws are not needed? Stop nit picking and address the issues please. Didn't you read the second source that shows anyone that we have a crap load of laws. As I said I would give 2 to 1 odds there are more than 20k laws.

from the link (HOW THE 20K NUMBER WAS ARRIVED AT) ; "They’ve been accumulating, of course, for more than 200 years. When federal laws were first codified in 1927, they fit into a single volume. By the 1980s, there were 50 volumes of more than 23,000 pages.

It's the fact you're making a false claim and trying to argue there are 20,000 gun laws, when there are not that many. We are not "saturated in gun laws." We can't even get adequate gun laws, any sort of gun control is nearly impossible, and we don't even make sure people are trained and know how to use a gun before we allow them to get one. We are saturated not with laws but with stupidity when it comes to guns.

Why do americans love fire arms. They have only one use, they KILL living things.

I live on a farm and use a rifle to shoot vermin rabbits, kangaroos, deer and pigs. My rifle is single shot bolt action, it does a fine job. Why would I need a fully automatic military style weapon, for the hordes of vicious rabbits and deer?

I look sadly at the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre, its america so it was hardly unusual, Americans love to kill other americans almost like a sport with some of the worlds most vicious weapons. Tell me why any citizen in the entire US needs anything more than a single shot rifle. If they own any automatics, machine guns, rpg etc in my opinion are deluded w a n k e r s quite frankly. This was a home grown crazy, who appears to hate Country and Western music, going berserk but with full legal right to purchase military style automatic weapons without any background checks, so how can I get upset, this is becoming the norm, it this is just another ordinary day in the good old USA, business as usual.

Prays are for bystanders group therapy, do something real, like restrict automatic weapons, do real background checks regularly, seems the simple answer.

How many would have died last night if this guy had only been able to purchase single shot rifles, why didn't he grab a 50cal or a couple of rpgs off ebay and do some serious damage. He certainly upped the ante maybe the next one will go for the ton (100 victims) this american phenomena is repeating itself on a very regular basis. I suspect we will see a repeat within the next 12 months or earlier at the current rate of occurrence. Americans must love it because they have done absolutely NOTHING about it. So how can I be upset as this is completely normal USA event. I cant help you, you guys have gotta help yourselves

Cheers

Actually, according to the gun shop owners, they did do the background checks.

Nevada gun shops say Stephen Paddock passed background checks

He added, "All state and federal laws were followed and an FBI background check took place and was passed by the buyer."

Christopher Sullivan, general manager of Guns & Guitars, did not say what weapons Paddock, who lived in Mesquite, had bought.

"All necessary background checks and procedures were followed, as required by local, state, and federal law. He never gave any indication or reason to believe he was unstable or unfit at any time," Sullivan said in a statement.

Stephen Paddock bought guns at at least two shops. via WESH
"We are currently cooperating with the ongoing investigation by local and federal law enforcement in any way we can."

I agree in this instance the checks did not work but in many other instances they help keep known weeds away. The problem as I understand it is gun show purchases where no checks occur
I don't suppose he had to justify why he needed this particularly nasty arsenal. eg For self protection from the hordes of Country and Western Fans and North Korean Paratroopers.

Yes, there are those who are trying to change that so that background checks are required at gun shows.

They've been saying all over the news (and I've heard this before) that they were purchased as single shot, but they say it's not too difficult to convert them to automatic. Apparently, there are instructional videos on YouTube on how to do it.

I think they're still trying to determine the motive.

As to why anyone would need such a large arsenal, I never understood it myself. I've come across a few survivalists in my time - people who are preparing for the end of the world. They stock up on food, weapons, and ammunition, living "off the grid." In some of the offbeat areas, I've heard of entire extended families all living on the same road, with underground tunnels connecting their houses as part of their plan for preparedness. It's kind of weird when you think about it.

What is more important is that you are saturated in guns..... ......

Heh.

Who else?

It's really weird that ultralibs love to defend Islam so much. It's like you don't even realize their form of conservative is 1000x more potent than the homegrown kind, and of all the views they hate, they hate yours the most.

Yeah, that has always left me scratching my head. Why do some liberals defend a system that's patently misogynist, homophobic, anti-science, and generally intolerant towards other cultures and belief systems? What makes it particularly odd is that they're highly critical of Christian fundamentalism for those very reasons, so why is Islamic fundamentalism given a pass? If the shoe was on the other foot they most certainly wouldn't be defending liberals and their beliefs.

Law enforcement just came out and said they found two machine guns in the hotel room. Its on Aust's ABC news

Did law enforcement say they found them, or did the media say law enforcement found them? The media likes to call anything fully automatic a "machine gun", sometimes even mere semi-automatics if they have a "military" look to them.
