LDS fascination

For some reason, I am fascinated with Latter Day Saints. I like parts of the religion, but don't like others. The thing I really like if they seem very family-oriented, moral and modest. Just clean-living folks. That appeals to me. But I can't agree with some of the doctrine and rules. I don't know why I keep looking into it. Help me sort this out.

What are you trying to sort out, exactly?

wether she should be a lds or not obviously

That's a possibility. However, I didn't want to assume. Sometimes I like to 'sort things out' about a religion I have no interest in joining, to understand the belief system and its people better.

Just wanted to clarify with her.

Yes, I like that part, too. I prefer not to talk about the rest. Points of agreement and all that.

I think its all or nothing, not something you can just halfway join. I suppose you could visit a church meeting, hear a sermon, sing some songs. Maybe something will pop for you.

The problem people have with the doctrine is it's all or nothing. Either the LDS church is the only true church on earth or it isn't. I know of no other religious group that claims this. If you have problems with whether it's true I recommend bookofmormoncentral.org or evidencecentral.org.

As for the rules if you want to know if one is true you are supposed to try it.

And thank you for admiring us

Yep. I know there are different kinds of Protestants. I was hoping there would be a progressive LDS group in the ranks, but I think they formed their own denomination that is cleaving itself to more Protestant tenets, which does not interest me. Maybe it can't be done, I don't know. I haven't visited my local ward, so I may do that.

Well, to be honest, many monotheistic religions say this. I kind of like what I heard and read, that other Christian religions are good, but LDS is more accurate.

Well, if I am halfhearted in that I like the lifestyle but not some particulars of the religion and don't want to convert, I want suggestions on how to indulge without joining. My mind is just everywhere in regard to religions.

Perhaps you could read the Book of Mormon or watch sermon given by their preachers? (Or whatever the technical term they use for them in that religion).

What do you find more accurate about it?

I tried. I got as far in the BOM as I could take it, but it makes no sense to me. I think they say they are more accurate because some things that were lost were restored with them. I do like that they are very biblical based, moreso than the Protestant churches.

Perhaps you could make some posts about LDS stuff; what you like and don't like

You could read blogs from Mormons, or other material by Mormons about their faith.

Do they have any different holidays than the mainstream Christians?

I think the holidays are the same.

Well, I don't think any religious text should be taken literally, so I can take Joseph Smith's visions as a dream or inspiration, but the idea that there were plates written in Reformed Egyptian, not a language, are not literal to me. It seems a stretch.

Did Jesus visit the Americas sometime? Again, I don't see that as literal, so not sure what to make of that idea.

The BOM, IMO, is not well written and really hard to understand. It has some nice verses, but it doesn't seem to have a cohesive storyline and some verses are almost identical, it's redundant.

The things I wish could be different: I wish they would do away with the garments. Since they have allowed exceptions to wearing it 24/7, why bother having it worn at all? Maybe at church, but so many don't wear it at all, especially women, since they are known to be uncomfortable and have caused UTIs and yeast infections, just don't require it.

I wish people could choose their own callings. I think a person will do a better job if it's something they have an affinity for.

I almost converted a few years ago, but about a week before my baptism date, I got cold feet. I just wasn't in 100%.

It seems there's fantasies all over about where Jesus may have been...

I always liked the garments! Granted, if they're impractical, they should be amended(especially if its causing health issues), but the idea of having a religious relic so close to one's skin appeals to me.

We(my husband and friend) were inspired by the garments once to gather (new) underwear and decorate them with magical/protective symbols once. It was fun. (We're very strange people.)

Probably for the best, if you're not 100% there. :)

I don't have a problem with them per se, but to require them isn't practical if they are going to allow for more exceptions. It's like the caffeine/alcohol issue. While I don't agree with how they interpreted "hot drinks" to mean those things, they have now allowed caffeinated soda but still don't allow coffee. If it were about health, soda should be out. Coffee is actually healthful unless you overindulge. It doesn't make sense to me I guess.

Mormons can't choose their own callings?

No. It is decided by some of the leaders after praying about it.

I had no idea about the drinks! Are there any other dietary restrictions?

No. It is decided by some of the leaders after praying about it.

Wow! That requires relinquishing too much control for my liking. But, to each their own
