LDS president passes on

I just got a text from my friend about this. I read it seconds ago. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

I didn't know much about Gordon Hinckley, but he seemed like an awesome gentleman. I remember when Pope John Paul II died in 2005. It didn't really hit me until they got the bells ringing for him big time, and then I was overcome by emotion. I imagine this President would be the LDS equivelent of JP2.

I remember when the Pope died. I was standing at a bus stop in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. There was a small TV and I saw it come on the news.

It's interesting, Presdient Hinckley is the only president of the church I remember during my lifetime. This certainly will be interesting. I'm actually kind of excited for all the changes in church leadership that are going on.

Yes, he truly was an "awesome gentleman." He had been in relatively good health recently, too. He had been treated for what I believe was colon cancer (I'm not positive about that, though) a few years back, but seemed to be doing well. He was loved by all who had the opportunity to know him, and will be missed even by non-members of our Church who had associated with him over the years. During my lifetime, he was one of seven men who served as President of the Church, and was my favorite.

Yeah, John Paul II had a nice spirit about him, he seemed to have a lot of Christ-like qualities.

We will all miss President Hinckley for sure, he was the kind of person everyone loved and admired.

He truly was a prophet of God.

Just before this happened I registered at LDS.net and was making a few posts, and this news arrived, and now nobody on either side, on either forum, will be in the mood to argue much about other things. It's sort of like how a major illness can both ruin all your plans and yet put the important things back into perspective.

Sorry to see this bit of news

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695247765,00.html

President Gordon B. Hinckley, who led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through explosive growth during his more than 12 years as president, died at 7 p.m. today of causes incident to age, surrounded by family. He was 97.

Thank you for the condolences Francine.

I'm not even sure what to say, he was sort of "my Prophet." He came into office when I was 10 years old, and I'm twenty-two now.

I was actually pleasantly surprised at the Salt Lake Tribune's article. Knowing the Tribune, it's amazing they didn't take the opportunity to bash him.

It is bitter sweet. So happy that he is with his beloved again, yet so sad to lose him… He was the prophet when I joined the church, it will be strange not to have him around… I’ll really miss him.

Really? I love the articles that Peggy Fletcher Stack writes. I think she's one of the best religious reporters in the country.

There's a live feed of KSL's coverage of his death at KSL.com: ksl.com - President Gordon B. Hinckley has passed away

I can't remember the church without President Hinckley. I'm in shock, but I love President Monson so I know that church is in good hands.
