Lefties?

This has probably already been discussed, but just thought I'd see who else on this forum is a left-hander. I am a proud south-paw. :D Any stories related to being left-handed? And wouldn't all you fellow lefties agree that we live in a world prejudiced against us? :p

I am left handed, yes the world is against us, and here is a weird story. Well not so much weird as an amazing coincidence.

I am left handed, the girl I was seeing at the beginning of my senior year in high school was left handed, her mother was left handed, her father is left handed, her younger brother is left handed, and now her current boyfriend is left handed. Just weird

I use different hands for different tasks. For manipulative tasks like writing, eating, brushing my teeth, or shaving, I use my left hand. For tasks that require more strength--like swinging a bat or throwing a baseball or arm wrestling--I use my right hand.

Then of course there are things like giving my girlfriend a back massage, and I use both hands for that. :)

I am left-handed. When I first started school here at age 5 I was strapped (corporally punished using a heavy leather strap) for being so by my teacher :( . After my Grandmother threatened to change her dress size from the inside she never did it again! :D

Is there any other prejudice than sitting to the left of a lefty at a crowded dinner table?

I'm surprised to hear that you think there is prejudice at your being 'lefties' - there is a theory that because you are the way you are, you use more of your brain than 'righties' and therefore tend to be more intelligent.

I was a 'leftie' at birth, and my mother thought it her duty to make me use my right hand. As a result (I'm sure that was the cause), I have no hand eye coordination, and am dispraxic.:)

The Incas of ancient Peru considered left-handedness a sign of good fortune.
-From The Left-Handers' Handbook by J. Bliss and J. Moella.

Left-handers excel in mathematics, music and chess. And the history of art certainly gives evidence of an advantage for left-handedness: Leornardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael were all left handed.
-Drawing On The Right Side Of the Brain by Betty Edwards

to be lovingly continued....

Leftie does has a distinction in heraldry and geneology. There is a device upon the shield called a bar ( a diagonal from top to bottom corners). A bar dexter is used to indicate the lawful son and procedes from top left to bottom right. A ******* in the line uses a bar sinister - the diagonal from top right to bottom left. Being a terrible Latin scholar, I believe dexter means "right" and sinister means "left".

So, would a left handed person be sinister? You might notice that the international signs that prohibit a practise use the bar sinister.

Another lefty here!

I always shave to sit at the far left side of the table when eating with my family so I don't bump elbows with anyone. Im the only left-handed, blue-eyed, blonde out of all five of us.

My ex- girlfriend and her little brother are both right handed, but their parents are both left-handed. Interesting.

Left-handedness isn't genetic is it?

The role genetics may play in handedness is not clear. It is possible, common, and normal for two right-handed parents to have a left-handed child, and for two left-handed parents to have a right-handed child. Some families do seem to have more lefties than others, but the meaning of this is elusive.

We lefties are in our 'right minds'.:D

The prejudice I refer to, Michel, is nothing malicious, nor peoples' attitudes to left-handers. I simply mean that so many products are made with right-handers in mind, just because they are the majority. So we lefties have to make do using things that are meant for righties. I guess it actually can be a benefit in the long run---it makes us more ambidextrous. I actually use my right hand and arm for a great deal of things---kinda like Spinkles.

The whole genetic thing is interesting. I and one brother are the only lefties in a family of 8 children. Both my parents are right-handed as well. As far as I know, none of my immediate relatives are left-handed either. Strange.
