Let's talk about Bias

We Never Know

No Slack
If you are....
-Gay, are you gay bias?
-Christian, are you christian bias?
-Straight, are you straight bias?
-Transgender, are you transgender bias?
-Atheist, are you atheist bias?
-Religious, are you religious bias?
-A meat eater, are you meat bias?
-A vegetarian, are you vegetarian bias?
-A dem, are you dem bias?
-A repub, are you repub bias?
-Like guns, are you gun bias?

Etc etc etc. I could list much more.

My point is I see people being told their opinions or thoughts might/could be wrong because they are bias.

Aren't we all bias in some ways?

We are all biased in some way and to some degree. But some are aware of their bias and try to mitigate it, others embrace their bias.

We are indeed all biased.
But with everything it is a balance.

In Australianese slang, being an unfair supporter of anything is usually called being “one eyed.”
Meaning that one has allowed their bias to blind them to the bad and only focus on the good of (insert whatever they support here.)

This does seem to be common in politics and even growing. Or maybe I’m now old enough to recognise it. But you know like I am a voter of parties like the Reason Party (yeah I know, weird title but I support their policies) and Labor, (roughly a more leftish Democratic Party) though that’s mainly because they are one of the major parties here. So that’s moreso out of a “necessary evil” kind of thinking. I kind of agree with them mostly-ish lol
So if a Liberal (our Conservative Party) says something dumb and I criticise it and then a politician from the parties I usually vote for says something dumb, I would need to criticise that just as harshly. Otherwise my bias would be clouding my judgment

It’s fine to have bias. It’s a very innate human thing. When it becomes a problem is when you allow it to overtake your perception of both who you support and your opponents.
Iow I try my best not to be a one eyed supporter.
Try being the optimal word there lol

Sometimes we want bias. E.g. we want our lawyer to be biased towards our side. We want our politicians to be biased when debating for our cause.
We don't want judges to be biased and we don't want politicians to be biased when it comes to making decisions.
And most of us want unbiased (as much as that is possible) news.

Ahh that’s a valid point.

Yes, for we are all interpreters. And whatever it is that we want, will always distort our view on what is.

To be genuine with oneself, is to be mindful of one’s bias.

Doublestandardism.
A judge would be harsh to a man he has antipathy to.
The same judge would release a sexy woman with revealing clothes...
who committed the same transgression as the first man.

The problem is that such bias are allowed in the US. Not over here.

Bias is essentially comfort due to familiarity. It is unavoidable, but should be recognized and compensated for.

It is even better to acquire familiarity.

However, not all bias is towards protecting the familiar. Unconfortable as the realization is, I have come to understand that there are people and movements that I actually protected due to a lack of familiarity. Sometimes we assume the best.

Yes, for the most part, people are biased in various ways. I think the topic might come up during discussions of public policy where someone might advocate for or against a certain position. They might give their arguments, and someone else might reject those arguments and claim that the real, unspoken reason for their position is that they're biased.

A common example might be a debate over immigration and border security. Some people advocate building a wall along the border, and might possibly use arguments related to law enforcement and national security to justify their position. Others might reject those arguments as false, while claiming that the real reason they want a border wall is because they're biased against Hispanics.

Some bias I accept as good.
Some bias I can’t help.
Some bias I do my best to set aside because I know it’s unfair.

There is a difference between judgement and bias. There is a difference between preference and bias.

When you judge, you should look at both sides and make a decision based on the evidence and reason. This is not a bad thing.

When you have a preference, you should realize that other prefer other things and are just as justified in their preferences.

Having a bias means you have decided that your idea is the best in spite of any further argument or any differences of taste.

So, no. None of your examples necessarily implies bias. They imply judgement and preference, but those are very different than bias.

If you can see no good in an opposing view and refuse to even look at their evidence and reasons, then you are biased. If you have looked at their evidence and views and still think they are wrong, you are either using judgement or allowing for differences in preference.

Bias is wrong when it is used against an innate quality. Bias against actions is not unreasonable.

All "beliefs" are a bias. But that isn't the question in most instances. The question is are the beliefs accurate? Do they embody an intent to diminish others? Do they incite abusive behavior in the 'believer'?

Just calling something a bias doesn't mean much in itself. Many of the things we think and believe are biased. Most, in fact. Even all, technically. The reason bias is a problem isn't that it exists, it's how we express it.
