Anyone have any ideas what happened to the common ancestor that gave rise to the two main groups of life, which are bacteria and archaea roughly 4 billion yrs ago? Is it simply that we can’t identify it, haven’t discovered it, it perhaps went extinct, was it a one time event that occurred between non living things or was it a combination of two or more of these scenarios?

I was actually surprised when I just learned that we don’t know how life started on earth considering we know roughly how old the earth is and when it started to form. I always thought we knew. Learn something new every day.

Probably a little bit of both. Nothing from that long ago is still around, and a lot of things like bacteria/archaea don't fossilize.

Fossilization actually takes very precise conditions to occur.

@Jimmy,

Let's say you're right about evolution and creation in the blink of an eye. What's next? How can I apply this to my life to make it better?
