Knowing it off by heart to whip out at dinner parties and the like is part of being Welsh :p

In fact most Welsh place names are a short descriptive sentences of salient features of the place. Its actually quite sensible way to name, albeit this one is a tad extreme.

For example im from Ystradgynlais which means 'Vale of Cynlais', Cynlais having been a person. Down the road is 'Pontardawe' which means 'bridge over the river Tawe'. Most of the placenames are intelligible in this way, rather than being some random word.
