Looking for Dark Fiction

Kori

Dark Valkyrie...what's not to love?
First off I know about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and so on. Also I know I could look up popular Dark Fiction books on Google. However a critic can drone on and on about it but all they write is all they write. If someone here recommends me something I can ask questions about it. So anyone know anything?

If you're looking for classics:

Frankenstein

Dracula

And anything by Edgar Allen Poe.

I'm looking for something more in the Modern Era. I do not care if it's fantasy or alternate reality just as long as the author isn't dead or hasn't been dead for a long time.

Just about anything by Chuck Palahniuk. They are twisted, sadistic, f'ed up, entirely unforgettable characters, and miles-and-miles of philosophical depth behind all the chaos and mayhem. Invisible Monsters is my favorite.

I suppose I'd recommend Worm, the web serial and Pact the web serial by the same author. Both have a dark atmosphere, Pact moreso. Worm is mostly morality/Anti-hero stuff, but it's really well done and even though it starts off a bit slow and typical it really grows on you.

For Dark Fantasy I'd go with Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence (It's pretty gritty), Assassins Apprentice by Robin Hobb and Daughter of Blood by Anne Bishop (Warning though as both are high fantasy so if that's not your thing...)
For Dark Comedy I'd go with the YA novel Cracked by Eliza Crewe. Hilarious and dark.
For Dark Romance I'd go with The Tied Man by Tabitha McGowan. Dark, terrible and heartbreaking.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison is a really good, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi short story. The message is pretty grim.

Thank you everyone. I maybe going to Books a Million tomorrow. I'll check these out. Any Dark fiction or Darkish fiction books revolving around a rebel group fighting against an oppressive government. I'm sure there are but getting at least one of those might be a good idea.

I cry tears of pain for you if Books a Million is all you have. I cry for me to, because they never have what I'm looking for which means either going online or driving about 50 miles to get to Barnes & Nobles.
