Have you ever spoken your own language with a foreigner?
I have. Many times. I have had several friends from all over Europe. I used to communicate in English with most of them...but some of them did know Italian, and I knew their language.
So... I would communicate in my own language (and them in theirs, which was German).
People on the street were weirded out..lol...
some things were lost in translation. So it was even in funnier.:p

That's cool. I know so many French know English.
so you speak in English and they reply in French, right?:)

Varies, we are in a fairly multi national society, with lots of tourism too. I'll speak French or English,. The response may be the opposite, or German or Spanish. Basically we all understand each other no matter what languages are used

As an aside i sometimes find myself mixing language, I'll speak to an English speaking French person in both English and French (and sometimes even frenlish ;-)

We have a English and French speaking German neighbour. Those conversations can be enlightening. Maybe one day we can build a European common language.

An incident just before covid hit. An English woman in obvious difficulty in the local supermarket. I butted in as translator. After the 3 way exchange between her, the shop owner and myself she thanked me, thinking i was french, said, "you speak very good English". To which Christian (the owner who does speak a little English) chuckled and muttered in broken English "weeth un horrible Lancashire accent "

Yep, and I've talked about this before in the context of my English and my wife's Italian [Sicilian dialect].
