Lost my job today.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
The Manufacturing plant I was working out of got permanently shuttered admist a lengthy Court battle.

I was working for a trucking company that was integrated in with the facilities. Most of the Commodities I hauled where coke, coal, and metals.

It took my company with it and the jobs of well over a hundred people working there. Many with Children and Families.

Thought I'd be able to finish the week as I had a run set for Toronto tomorrow, but got the news today that my run was cancelled as the company is permanently closing.

The thing that hurts most is the owners and the management staff. They actually respected everyone working for them and treated their employees like human beings.

Had a round of goodbyes to my co-workers and management and staff. It was harder than I thought as a lot of them were taking things pretty hard given all the years of hard work and labor they put into the business.

It serves as a reminder that nothing is permanent and the only thing we can do is go forward For Better or For Worse.

I plan on attending college this spring to fulfill one of my past regrets as a young adult out of school when I passed up the opportunity for a graphic design degree for which I was accepted at that time.

I'm probably going to be the only fifty-three-year-old in class . Sigh. But it's a new dawn. ..

I work in the medical field and my job involves a lot of physical lifting. I had a really, really bad shoulder injury (cleaning a bathtub of all things) which took me out of my job for a good six months.
I decided to go back to college and get an associate's degree in web site design just in case this ever happened again and I needed a backup plan.
Long story short, during those courses I found people of all ages and walks of life. From 19 year old freshfaced right-out-of-highschoolers to 40 and 50 year olds looking for a turn of direction to 60 and 70 year olds looking to keep themselves occupied by continuing to learn new things.

You won't be alone.

Good luck to you. Make sure to keep up your self care.

I am sorry to hear that. While we might be an opposing ends of political debates, I sincerely hope for the best! I admire that you are already considering how to get your chin up and move forward. Many folks do not have that sort of determination. Best of luck!

I appreciate the kindness. :0)

One of my childhood dreams was driving the big rigs and I achieved that. If I wanted to continue to do so, it won't be hard for me to find a job, but it's been taking a toll on me lately due to my health issues involving my diabetes and my heart attack. I don't know how many years I would last and New York has a program called Excelsior where I can attend Community College but will need to maintain a certain criteria to stay qualified for the program.

I already attended open houses last year to check out the curriculum. I won't be able to get in this fall/winter semester but that's okay, it'll give me time for studying up and refreshing myself for the entrance exam and to get a head start once classes start in the spring.

I'm a little nervous, but hopeful. I think I'm ready for a nice desk job at this point in my life.

How old would you be if you don't attend college?

For what it is worth, I did not enter the rabbinate until I was at an age when most rabbis are retiring or close to it.

Life is very often less than we would like it to be. So many things we have no control over. What, hopefully, we can control is how we respond.

You seem to be responding well.

Are you planning on getting a job to hold down the expenses in the meantime? The good news is it seems like you have a marketable skill set that can help.

Appreciate the support much. :0]

I'm old enough from experience to know that crying and buckling over doesn't solve anything. It might make you feel better in some ways, but you stagnate and nothing ever gets done to improve your situation.

I found it much more practical and beneficial to cry and buckle over while simultaneously moving forward at the same time. Trust me, I got a lump in my throat today , but I also have a plan A and Plan B.

Just so you know I enjoy political debates for the debate aspect on the side I choose to defend. I will never hold a grudge against anybody on the basis of the banter of the debates nor at ones political affiliation past the dialogue of the topic at hand. But I do like to brawl when it comes to topics like politics.

It certainly doesn't mean that I'll be like that and other subjects where we can have a jolly good time with lots of laughs! And agreements!

Anyways for the time being, I'm kind of political-ed out and not much in the mood for word brawling at the "Libbys" at the moment. But I'll get back in form again once I get my gumption back. *Grin*

But never feel just because we vemenitly disagree on politics we can't have great dialogue and banter and a slew of other topics. You'll always be welcome on my threads should you choose to do so at any time. I'll never put people on ignore either.

I'm really sorry @Nowhere Man . It's a very difficult situation. Stay strong and keep looking for something else. Better times will come.

Well I got jobs I could go to if things get bad enough in my present industry.

But I'm thinking in the long-term as my health is not going to get any better anymore. Not that I'm going to keel over and die tomorrow, I hope! It's just a mix of experiencing the initial pangs of old age coupled with my medical issues having diabetes 2 and coronary artery disease.

I'm going to take it as a Crossroads in my life and pursue another profession.

My wife is holding down a good job (she's a degreed professional) and my unemployment should be okay enough to ride us through at the moment. But I got options if something were to interfere with our plans.

Right now I plan on beginning studies for my entrance exam and the spring semester. It's a nice opportunity to ride out
the winter this year and prepare for the spring. I'm also checking out if there's any programs for people with disabilities for job retraining given it's time I think to change careers while the opportunity is available.

I'm sorry to hear this but also glad that instead of dwelling on it you are formulating a plan, this is a reason I think you will be OK and wish you success and more important happiness in what you will be doing.

That's a lesson thats very tough to learn but when you do, you'll notice that even the worst situations don't last forever. Like the Brits say I'm keeping a stiff upper lip.

Sorry to hear of your job loss, but glad to hear you made enough at it to set aside sufficient funds to attend college.

If you end up doing math placement testing, check out Kahn academy https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...FjAAegQIBBAD&usg=AOvVaw0_s2SBN24MRaNomNW41lCw
My husband used it when he was studying for his placement tests and it is an awesome resource.
