A person often needs to be loved by others before they can love themselves. For me my friends loving me has helped me to see the value of myself enough to actually love myself.

Also, some people seem unloving. Perhaps they are unloving. But perhaps they've never been loved in any normal sense to understand what that looks like. A person can't generally put forth love if they've never experienced it.
American individualism is so incredibly toxic sometimes and this is an example of it.
The only - ONLY - reason that I have a healthy sense of self-worth is because I grew up in an environment where I had parents that actually loved me. And as I met humans who didn't have this and struggled with self-worth, I realized how blessed and fortunate I was. Self-love doesn't start within the individual. It starts with how OTHERS are relating to you. Nobody lives in a vacuum.
