MA in Magic

I think I may be going back to school. Better, I may be able to help this ma-jestic field of study. Being a founder in an esoteric/occultic religion and philosophy.

University of Exeter to offer a Masters degree in occult sciences. The study of the esoteric and it's roles and uses in religions and society.

Edit: Think I found my next Degree :D

I would expect it to be very popular. Seriously. I hope you go for it. Although, I still doubt how accurate it can be. If something is occult, it's not going to be found in books. The books I see on the occult seem to be intentionally flawed.

It's meant to explore it's role within society itself and less on whether or not the mysteries are inherently accurate.

Ah. I read "the study of the esoteric" to mean that they would be studying esoteric concepts themself. Although the knowledgebase of the students and the teachers combined might be really something amazing. Not that it its in the books. But the idea of bringing all of those "brains" together with all of their knowledge, experiences, and collected wisdom into one place would be pretty awesome.

Studying the roles, capabilities and importance of pure imagination and how it applies to culture and the world we live in? Splendid!

To me there is the rational which is based on evidence both physical, spiritual and abstract. Physical is science, the abstract and the hypothetical is philosophy.

The occult I consider to be pure imagination mixed with the spiritual. How does that relate to studying the real, and actual world we live in?

In the world of entertainment, and perhaps as a respite from the everyday world, this could be quite beneficial. It might enhance the understanding of the spiritual as well.

My vote? It relates to everything! I would call it "grounding". A person after such a study is very well grounded in what is "real". They are able to accurately identify and distinguish between objective-phenomena and inner-subjective-experience, not just for themself, but for others, and for everything.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I see no issue with a theology degree. But if you do, ok.
I find it interesting but with no actual practical value other than for people sharing the same interests.

Such degrees are to me, just something people like to have around as a status symbol givin a MA sounds very impressive to tout and brag about.

If magic was actually a real thing, it would of course be a different story. I wouldn't mind flying fireballs from my fingertips. Oh, the joy i would have! ;0]

That's not something I ever thought was possible of the occult or what have you.

Seems a strange thought to me.

Real, well of course it is. Even if you personally can't seem to experience it outside of a stage or tv program.

Since people can't seem to clucking read.

"It's really about, you know, what is the role of magic in society - the so-called hidden arts, ways in which people see the world and try to manipulate the world, the historical study of how magic, the occult, the esoteric was found in the world - across different cultures as well. I think that's Western traditions but also Eastern traditions, Islamic traditions and so forth."

"Yeah, so the dragons module is - it's really about, you know, conceiving of a world in which, you know, we can allow for these sorts of creatures - trolls, creatures like fairies, even unicorns.... It's really about, you know, trying to understand why it is these figures come up. You know, what function do they play in the sort of narrative we're telling ourselves? "

Information from the university's website about the program...

The core module, ARAM251 Esotericism and the Magical Tradition is a team-taught module where students explore key topics including magic in Greece and Rome, occult texts in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the history of witchcraft, magic in literature and folklore, deception and illusion, and the history of science and medicine, among other key themes.

By housing this program within the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, we place the Arabo-Islamic cultural heritage back where it belongs in the centre of these studies and in the history of the “West.” Decolonisation, the exploration of alternative epistemologies, feminism, and anti-racism are at the core of this programme.

It's past time for academia to interest themselves in paranormal and spiritual things. These things are badly understood and understudied.

Here is a lecture about dragons you might hear in the dragons module:
