Maize/Liberal Church Activism Possibilities?

I`m just tossing around some idea I got a a recent meeting of a local youth group that opposes the abstinense only curriculum being pushed in my local schools.

On idea I thought was great was to find religious groups that realise the dangers of this type of curriculum in schools .

Considering the typical bashing that will begin against us will be that we are anti-religious godless heretics trying to send kids souls to hell ealry I`d like to head that off at the pass.

I tagged Maize here in particular because of your affiliation with the UU church and their realistic outlook on faith.spirituality, and culture.

I am wondering if UU does get involved in community activism before I speak with them here.

I intend to approach the church regardless but would like a little info about the reaction I may get if you have any idea Maize.

I`d also like to get a few ideas about other churches that might give us support if anyone has any ideas.

thanks.

Find out from Planned Parenthood what ties they have with liberal religious organizations, and ask them for recommendations: learn from those who've been there.

Pretty laid back here in Texas the churches are. I was going to pm you and ask you how that was going and if the FFRF org got back with you..they looked promising on the net. The churches really vary from church to church Steve. Its kinda a touchy feely thing and you probably have a better vantage point than any of us do in cyberspace on this particular church.

I know a lot of UU's are ex Christians though and this kinda garbage is steered them clear of Christanity in the first place. So you may be playing with a loaded deck.

can u post your weblink again for us ? Man when i read that post it ticked me off too ..and i don't even have kids....

Yes it was actually the rep from PP who gave me the idea and mentioned the UU and said there were others.

I believe, like George W Bush, that abstinence, not condoms, will stop this whole AIDS thing. Ahahaha. Laughable, man. haha.

The guy who started the Humanistic Judaism philosophy was just the center of a large article on the faith in our local paper.
I had the opportunity to briefly meet Rabbi Wine. He's an impressive man. I'm glad I could offer somthing helpful.

Yes thats the name that escaped me, I don`t know how considering the heading for the article was some horrible play on words with his name.

The article was well written and pretty original though.

I appreciate the help Deut, I have so many different things going on at once with this that it seems at times my mind goes into overload and any thought process is stopped.

Thanks

I can only speak for my church here; yes, we are involved in community activism, however I'm not sure sex education in public schools is something that has ever been addressed. We do have sex education for teens and pre-teens in the church though. I'm afraid that if the UU church were to ever get involved in something like that, the double standard would arise where, since they are religious organization, their voice would not be allowed to be heard on an issue in the public school system, even though the Christian churches obviously are behind and supportive of the abstinense only programs. However, I would approach the local UU church with this and see what they have to say. They may be able to help you, or their hands may be tied because they are a church.
