Elon Musk has proposed to send two cargo ships to Mars in 2022, followed by a manned mission in 2024 as the first settlers for a Martian colony. They would then construct a fuel plant to begin the Colony.

Elon Musk is officially sending humans to Mars in 2024

If you want the full presentation its about 40 minutes long:

Any thoughts? Any sudden childish urge to play with rocket ships and space lasers? :D

I wish them the best. I will not be an early adopter for the 'colonize mars' plans. I'll wait until at least version 3.5 before getting in the vomit comet. xD

I'm too old to even think about it. But I also don't feel any urge to go if I were young.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Good for the imagination.

I feel it's going to be scrapped though. Complications and funding that sort of thing.

I wish they would use their money for weapons and space rockets to clean the earth oceans of plastic, to help the poor and the poor nations, even help the islands hurt so bad recently. After cleaning house, if there is more energy left, go and play outside.

How have they solved the cosmic ray problem ?

Do they plan to claim Mars for the US?

Or private ownership and run it as a tax haven?

And Martian gravity is just over a third of ours. That's going to hurt a lot when you finally get back to earth.

What about contaminating the place with earthly microbes? How can total sterility be maintained?

I don't think I'm a volunteer.

I didn't know SpaceX developed weapons?

Whether it's SpaceX, America or the North Korean's, man will go to Mars and start a colony there. It is inevitable. That said, it makes far more sense to establish a colony on the moon first. We would learn much from that endeavor that would make the Mars project a little less difficult.

Sorry. I think it a huge waste of money and lives to put people on Mars when there is no way home.
I agree, which is why the technology being developed and tested with reusability first stage rockets is paramount to this element of the mission. It is coming along nicely.

Speaking specifically for Elon Musk, while the man is a capitalist in the purest form, his other companies are doing fantastic work in reducing CO2 outputs. In regards to giving back to the Earth, I given Elon a pass.

Good news it that SpaceX is changing the game in regards to cost. If their current trend continues and they are able to continuously obtain commercial and government launch contracts, their funding isn't going anywhere.

It's such a pity that Elon Musk is one of a kind, really. An amazing individual.

Sorry. I think it a huge waste of money and lives to put people on Mars when there is no way home. An expenditure in futility in my book, but then I am neither paying nor going.

Everything that goes into space travel requires research and development that benefits science and technology all around, and thinking long term, will help with the expanding population generations down the road.
