the pursuit of religious adherence, when divorced from fundamental principles of compassion, justice, and humility, can lead to the neglect of the deeper spiritual virtues that underpin most religious traditions. This deviation may, in some cases, result in a form of religious legalism or exclusivism that contradicts the central themes of love, understanding, and empathy found in many faith traditions.

Sages in various traditions have said that as well. For Christians it's part of scripture: Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

The Master had quoted Aristotle; “in the quest of truth it would seem better and indeed necessary to give up what is dearest to us.” And he substituted the word “God” for “truth.”

Later a disciple said to him, “I am ready, in the quest for God, to give up anything: wealth, friends, family, country, life itself. What else can a person give up?”

The Master calmly replied, “One’s beliefs about God.” The disciple went away sad for he clung to his convictions. He feared “ignorance” more than death.

In order to find the god
that made men, we have
to stop following the
god that man made.
