The Birth of Jesus
On the onset of her labor, she was in extreme pain, both mentally and physically. How could a woman of such piety and nobility bear a child out of wedlock? We should mention here that Mary had a normal pregnancy which was no different than other women, and delivered her child as others do. In Christian belief, Mary did not suffer the pains of childbirth, for Christianity and Judaism regard menstruation and labor to be a curse upon women for the sin of Eve[1]. Islam neither upholds this belief, nor the theory of Original Sin, but rather strongly emphasizes that none shall burden the sin of others:
{ No person earns any (sin) except against himself (only), and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another...} [Quran 6:164]
{وَلاَ تَكْسِبُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ إِلاَّ عَلَيْهَا وَلاَ تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى ...} [الأنعام: 164]
Transliteration: Shay'in Wa Lā Taksibu Kullu Nafsin 'Illā `Alayhā Wa Lā Taziru Wāziratun Wizra 'Ukhrá..
Not only that, but neither the Quran nor the Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, ever mention that is was Eve who ate from the tree and enticed Adam. Rather, the Quran places the blame on either Adam alone, or on them both:
{Then Satan whispered suggestions to them both So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them} [Quran 7:20-22]
{فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْءَاتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَاكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ إِلاَّ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ (20) وَقَاسَمَهُمَا إِنِّي لَكُمَا لَمِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ(21) فَدَلاَّهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا الشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْءَاتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ وَنَادَاهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَن تِلْكُمَا الشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُل لَّكُمَا إِنَّ الشَّيْطَآنَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ} [الأعراف:20- 22]
Transliteration: Fawaswasa Lahumā Ash-Shayţānu Liyubdiya Lahumā Mā Wūriya `Anhumā Min Saw'ātihimā Wa Qāla Mā Nahākumā Rabbukumā `An Hadhihi Ash-Shajarati 'Illā 'An Takūnā Malakayni 'Aw Takūnā Mina Al-Khālidīna , Wa Qāsamahumā 'Innī Lakumā Lamina An-Nāşiĥīna , Fadallāhumā Bighurūrin Falammā Dhāqā Ash-Shajarata Badat Lahumā Saw'ātuhumā Wa Ţafiqā Yakhşifāni `Alayhimā Min Waraqi Al-Jannati Wa Nādāhumā Rabbuhumā 'Alam 'Anhakumā `An Tilkumā Ash-Shajarati Wa 'Aqul Lakumā 'Inna Ash-Shayţāna Lakumā `Adūwun Mubīnun.
Mary, due to her anguish and pain wished that she had never been created, and exclaimed:
{Would that I had died before this, and become something forgotten.} [Quran 19:23]
{قَالَتْ يَا لَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَذَا وَكُنتُ نَسْيًا مَّنسِيًّا} [مريم: 23]
Transliteration: Qālat Yā Laytanī Mittu Qabla Hādhā Wa Kuntu Nasyāan Mansīyāan.
After delivering the child, and when her distress could not be any more severe, the newborn babe, Jesus, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, cried out miraculously from beneath her, appeasing her and reassuring her that God will protect her:
{And he called to her from beneath her, Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to (any) person.} [Quran 19:24-26]
{فَنَادَاهَا مِن تَحْتِهَا أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا (24) وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا (25) فَكُلِي وَاشْرَبِي وَقَرِّي عَيْنًا فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ الْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا فَقُولِي إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَنِ صَوْمًا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ الْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا} [مريم:24-26]
Transliteration: Fanādāhā Min Taĥtihā 'Allā Taĥzanī Qad Ja`ala Rabbuki Taĥtaki Sarīyāan , Wa Huzzī 'Ilayki Bijidh`i An-Nakhlati Tusāqiţ `Alayki Ruţabāan Janīyāan , Fakulī Wa Ashrabī Wa Qarrī `Aynāan Fa'immā Taraynna Mina Al-Bashari 'Aĥadāan Faqūlī 'Innī Nadhartu Lilrraĥmani Şawmāan Falan 'Ukallima Al-Yawma 'Insīyāan.
Mary felt reassured. This was the first miracle performed at the hands of Jesus. He spoke reassuringly to his mother upon his birth, and once again when people saw her carrying her newborn baby. When they saw her, they accused her saying:
{O Mary, truly a strange thing you have brought!...} [Quran 19:27]
{فَأَتَتْ بِهِ قَوْمَهَا تَحْمِلُهُ قَالُوا يَا مَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْئًا فَرِيًّا} [مريم: 27]
Transliteration: Fa'atat Bihi Qawmahā Taĥmiluhu Qālū Yā Maryamu Laqad Ji'ti Shay'āan Farīyāan
She merely pointed to Jesus, and he miraculously spoke, just as God had promised her upon annunciation.
{He shall speak to people while still in the cradle, and in manhood, and he shall be from the righteous.} [Quran 3:46]
{وَيُكَلِّمُ النَّاسَ فِي الْمَهْدِ وَكَهْلاً وَمِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ} [آل عمران: 46]
Transliteration: Wa Yukallimu An-Nāsa Fī Al-Mahdi Wa Kahlāan Wa Mina Aş-Şāliĥīna
Jesus said to the people:
{I am indeed a slave of God. He has given me the Book and made me a Prophet, and He has made me blessed wherever I may be. And He has enjoined upon me prayers, and to pay the alms, as long as I live and (He has made me) kind to my mother, and He has not made me insolent, unblessed. And may Peace be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and on the Day I shall be raised to life.} [Quran 19:30-33]
{قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا (30) وَجَعَلَنِي مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَانِي بِالصَّلَاةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا (31) وَبَرًّا بِوَالِدَتِي وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِي جَبَّارًا شَقِيًّا (32) وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدتُّ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا} [مريم:30-33]
Transliteration: Qāla 'Innī `Abdu Allāhi 'Ātāniya Al-Kitāba Wa Ja`alanī Nabīyāan , Wa Ja`alanī Mubārakāan 'Ayna Mā Kuntu Wa 'Awşānī Biş-Şalāati Wa Az-Zakāati Mā Dumtu Ĥayyāan , Wa Barrāan Biwālidatī Wa Lam Yaj`alnī Jabbārāan Shaqīyāan , Wa As-Salāmu `Alayya Yawma Wulidtu Wa Yawma 'Amūtu Wa Yawma 'Ub`athu Ĥayyāan.
From here starts the episode of Jesus, his lifelong struggle to call people to the worship of God, evading the plots and plans of those Jews who would strive to kill him.
