Masks are better than vaccines

It's actually not a clickbait title. I was looking this up from a Quora question and thought I wonder what you guys will say about this. I won't be part of the discussion but curious nonetheless.

CDC director says face masks may offer more protection against COVID than a vaccine. Here's what other experts say. Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during his testimony before a Senate subcommittee on Wednesday that wearing face masks may be more effective at protecting against COVID-19 than a vaccine.

Lawmakers asked Redfield and other top health officials about the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic, and he was questioned about the CDC's recommendation that people wear masks — a practice President Trump has often dismissed.

"I'm not going to comment directly about the president, but I am going to comment as the CDC director that face masks, these face masks, are the most important powerful public health tool we have," Redfield said. "And I will continue to appeal for all Americans, all individuals in our country, to embrace these face coverings."

I read that as saying, masks are a safer bet right now than relying on a vaccine at this point. That's not to say masks will always be necessary, once through vaccinations being widely used we develop that overall herd immunity. We vaccinate our children for measles and smallpox, and because we all have been, we don't need to wear masks anymore. Before that however..... masks are the first and best line of defense. We're not at the place enough people have been immunized. And if the goofball deniers persist in rejecting reality, masks may be with us forever. :(

I find this surprising..

A reminder, - masks do NOT protect the wearer, they protect those around them.

It doesn't matter if masks are 100% effective...

It's the human element that's the problem.

John Campbell had a video today he highlighted a story form Johns Hopkins. By April vaccines might reduce deaths by 9,000. If mask use was 95%, it would reduce deaths by 66,000.

Count me in as well.
No probs.
My wife has been collecting 'fashion' masks, she likes ones with little dachshunds all over them. :)
In fact many ladies around here have gone overboard with their choices of colours and designs. It's quite fun to see them all. :)

It amazes me the number of people around here that cannot seem to get their masks up over their nose.

Do they think that is effective? or are they just rebelling? lazy? oblivious?

I never did like that chant. Why can't they protect both?

Anything covering your face will block someone else's sneeze or cough. I was reading awhile back that if you can smell anything through the mask, they aren't working effectively. So, I'd assume it's both ways-for you not to catch their symptoms if they are asymptomatic and vis versa.

Our older daughter does the same as she is one of the voluntary distributers of masks for the school district she teaches in.
