Mass call to outlaw Jewish groups

Mass call to outlaw Jewish groups

Over 5,000 known public activists and members of the clergy in Russia have sent a petition to the state prosecutor's office in which they demand to outlaw Jewish groups.

In the petition, the signatories use quotes from Kitzur Shulhan Aruch, which they argue prove their claim that Judaism is a fanatic and racist religion that hates gentiles.
Among those who signed the letter, according to Army Radio, are ex-generals, artists and the former world champion in chess.

This is terrible :(. It's another black spot on the history of the Orthodox faith. Russia is bad about that, and it's one of the points I'm proud of the US for.

Sadly, this is normal for humans, and it is a problem that predates Communism. 19th century Russia had those Pogroms, after all, and the problem is resurfacing. It seems they haven't learned their lesson here :(

I would like to think that I could be of help in Russia, but I'm here in the States. I can't even influence the outcome with one person over there as it stands now :(

It starts small and grows big. Russia also has a strong anti-semitic undercurrent to their culture. In this situation, it only takes a seed such as this to grow and become stronger, and it must be challenged and fought now. As JS adroitly pointed out, the Nazis started pretty small themselves.

Two snippets from the article:
...However, in a 306-58 vote that hewed to party lines, the State Duma adopted a declaration saying that the 'clear anti-Semitic intent' of the letter and other appeals for government actions targeting Jews 'prompts indignation and sharp condemnation.' ...
At least there are some people within the Russia political structure who are willing to speak out against the letter.
...It is possible to say that the entire democratic world today is under the monetary and political control of international Judaism, which high-profile bankers are openly proud of,' the letter says. ...
Wow....this kind of rhetoric sure smacks of pre-WWII Nazi Germany.

I know radical and fringe groups are always espousing extreme positions, but for them to publicly state their prejudice in a letter is disturbing at best. :(

Do you really think that after the holocaust, the world will sit back and let it start up again? If there's even a hint of jewish repression, the global community (particularily the USA) would put the smack down on Russia pretty quick.

Well Israel wouldn't sit back, and if Israel went to the aid of the Russian jews, the US would be right behind them.

Yes, I do. I think we're seeing it happen right now. In Darfur, we are basically seeing genocide take place. Nobody really seems to care, so I don't think the world is all that different from the pre-WWII era.

Though Israel may not sit back there is no gaurantee about the US's involvment...
The question one has to ask is would it be in the nation interest of the US to get involved in such a scrap...backing Isreal...especially if Putin kept any sort of persecution on the down low...remember we are talking about the former head of the KGB

all governments will act in their national interest and while it is the interest of Israel to stand up to such anti-semitism...this does not necessarily make it the national interest of the United States, as horrible as it is to say.
We like to think of America as having the high moral ground but lets be honest, we act in accordance with our interests...and sometimes the politicians don't see persecution and genocide as being of "national interest"
it's horrible but think about it...how much time do we dedicate to things like Darfur and the AIDs epidemic in mainstream media where the majority of Americans get their news...

I always got the impression that the US and Israel had some kind of "special relationship", i always assumed that's why the US gets involved with the peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Please correct me if this is not true.

Yes America has a relationship with Israel...either because of Oil...or because the Jewish populations here is a very vocal and well funded constituancy...or for any number of reasons...

and America backs israel on many political fronts...most if not all dealing w/the muslim world...
But the question is would they back Israel if things came to a head w/...say...a european country like Russia, or France, or Great Britian
I think alot more is at play in the relationship between israel and america...alot having to do w/ the US's own relationship w/ the muslim world

I'm afraid to have to admit that you may well be right; I shall never personally forgive the attitude Britain had towards Israel after WW2 - nor shall I understand it.
