Friends, I am posting this on David's behalf.

Hello my fellow DD'ers....

I was in Chicago at my Seminary when the Evacuation was ordered. I have just flown back in to Galveston, and will be quickly packing up the house and the Fellowship of the most important stuff, and Sandy, Athena (cat) and I will be on the road towards Knoxville, TN.

We are getting out of the way.

As such, Kiwi is in charge here at DD for the next few days. You all be nice to him, and support him. I will be taking 5 computers with me, so I will check in when I can.

We may lose everything.... but we will not lose our lives.

If someone could re-post this on www.positivedeism.com and the Unitarian Universalist section of www.religiousforums.com I would appreciate it.

I told many evacuees of Katrina that we we welcomed them because we knew it could hapeen to us. How prophetic of me.

Yours in faith,

David
Please hold David, Sandy, Athena (and his 5 computers :) ) in prayer or meditation.

I hold David, Sandy, Athena (and the computers) in my heart. But I feel like my heart is going to break. It's too much; not again; not so soon. :(

Thanks for informing us, kiwimac. Please let us know when you hear from David again.

Absolutely - we are about 1 hour northwest of Galveston, and soon we will also need to decide whether to stay or go. Our prayers are with Davidium, and with all in the path of this hurricane.

Lilithu -

The positive side of this is that while we may get flooded and hammered here in southeast Texas, it will be more like Florida's recent experiences. We don't have the huge bowl shape which caused New Orleans to fill up with water; and after Katrina, no one is taking Rita for granted.

I was just thinking last night while watching the weather reports that David and Engyo are in the path of Rita. You guys stay safe and we'll see you soon. If you need a place to stay, head on up to Virginia. ;)

As Scott says, thanks for posting this kiwimac.

I can't even begin to imagine what this is doing to people's lives. I will pray for all those affected; it just doesn't feel enough. I'm with Lilithu on this one.:(

Thanks to all of you for your well wishes...

Sandy and I are safe, along with Athena (our cat). We are currently in a hotel about 25 miles east of Little Rock, Arkansas. We will be driving to Knoxville Tennessee tomorrow, where I will set up an office to begin finding the members and friends of our UU Fellowship, and making sure they are ok.

That, and preparing for the insurance paperwork that will need to be filed, most likely.

It took us almost 24 hours to get out of Houston. The traffic gridlock the media is talking about is no joke. If anything, they are understating it. If it were not for my filling up at every gas station I saw, no matter how long ago I filled up, and a few good decisions about getting off the normal evacuation routes, we would be stuck by the side of the road with no gas... and weathering out the storm in our car. People are frustrated, and I witnessed some violence and threats of violence.

Sandy and I slept last night for three hours in our car in the parking lot of a vacant building by the side of the highway. There was no other choice.

In N.O., many did not evacuate. In Houston/Galveston, most people were not prepared for the evacuation itself. Some may pay for it with their lives.

We will probably lose most of what we own. I know that... and have accepted it.

We saved what was important... each other.

David

Namaste David,

It's so good to hear from you! Wish I could give you a big hug. We had our Autumn Equinox observance at our church this evening, focusing on gratitude. And everyone's minds were on you guys on the Gulf coast. As selfish as it sounds, I am grateful to not have to face what you're facing. I am grateful for home and security and the awareness that I have these things that Katrina and Rita have brought me. I am grateful for people like you who serve those in need and can turn around and face your own challenges without bitterness. I am grateful that you're safe, and hope that Engyo is too.

God bless you and Sandy and Athena and everyone else facing these storms. Stay safe and please let us know how the other members of your fellowship are.

Hi all,

Sandy and I are in Knoxville. I am now beginning the task of finding our fellowship members.... I have located about 20 at this point.

There are many lessons that will come out of this... and some will be profound for me. I know more about what means the most to me.... and about how attached to things we are. I learned that in a crisis most people only think of themselves, but there are a precious few who think of themselves none at all....

I learned that Sandy and I can rebuild anything but eachother and our relationship. So long as we have that... all else is gravy.

For now, I need some food and some sleep. We plan on being in Knoxville for at least 5 days... but for now this computer geek is on a dialup connection...

Yours in faith,

David

Hi all -

Our family made it to Austin after a harrowing 13 hour trip which normally takes 3 hours. All safe; and I heard from a neighbor who stayed that the house is fine; 1 limb down but it didn't hit the house or the other car. Power is currently out, but only in part of the neighborhood; it shouldn't be major repairs required.

Now we just have to get back; hopefully this isn't as big a deal as gettting out of time was.

Dear David,
Thinking of you and your family with my whole heart. I remember how supportive so many American people were to those of us in Britain after the terrorist attacks of the 7th July 2005, and I hope that those of us here in Britain can offer our friendship when they are in danger. I hope for the best possible outcome in the troubles ahead, and anyone else who may be having to face the hurricane.

At first view, it appears that both my spiritual and physical homes weathered the storm.

One of our members hunkered down on the Island, and he told me that the Fellowship is ok, and that almost all of the houses on the Island survived. I am betting one of them was mine.

It will still be several days before we go back. We will not go back until the power is back on there. We figure if we leave here when the Island is opened back up, then when we get back 20 hours later we might have missed most of the traffic.

Perhaps we can even have dinner with Steve Dowell on our way though Memphis, as we will probably go that way to avoid I-10 and Beaumont area.

I have found about half of my members, and am feeling good about the rest. Galveston dodged a bullet, but this has to be a wakeup call for us. There is still 2 months in Hurricane season... and right now any storm that enters the gulf will get big and head for us. Sandy and I are doing some thinking on how much longer we will be staying in Galveston... but will probably stay till next summer. I doubt we will go through another Hurricane season there though, as much as I love it.

For now, I am at my mothers, have dialup access, and am trying to find ou members.

I will keep you all informed... and toorrow I am going to the UU Church here.....

yours in faith and reason,

David

Just thought I would let you all know that I was back in Galveston. In fact, as the cable lines were laying in my back yard when I got home, I am posting this from the computer in my Church office, and not from my house... no cable modem yet.

Our house had some light damage... a cracked window, lost some roof shingles, and a leak or two... but nothing bad and all easily repairable. The church survived with no damage at all, just some down branches and the like.

In fact, we have gone ahead with a scheduled 4 day Zen Buddhist Retreat, which is beginning as I type this and will conclude on Sunday. I am locked in my office so as not to disturb them. :)

I am writing a story of all that has occurred, and sometime in the next week or so I will post it in my journal.

But we are putting everything back togehter and moving forward... Thank you all for being supportive...

Yours in faith,

David
