Michelle Obama's DNC speech

sun rise

The world is on fire

I just watched her speech and she totally nailed exactly why this election is so important. We've seen the darkness she points out in the news and here on RF. It's why a number of honorable Republicans including those who worked for Trump are supporting the Harris/Walz ticket. She calls forth and honors the "better angels of our nature" I'm going to DO SOMETHING. A few salient quotes

The chance to vanquish the demons of fear, division, and hate that have consumed us… and continue pursuing the unfinished promise of this great nation—the dream that our parents and grandparents fought and died and sacrificed for.
...
The belief that if you do unto others… if you love thy neighbor… if you work and scrape and sacrifice, it will pay off—if not for you, then maybe for your children or your grandchildren… those values have been passed on through family farms and factory towns… through tree-lined suburbs and crowded tenements… through prayer groups and National Guard units and social studies classrooms.
...
Because no one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American… no one!
...
we will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth.
...
No matter how good we feel tonight or tomorrow or the next day, this is still going to be an uphill battle… so we cannot be our own worst enemies.
No, the minute something goes wrong… the minute a lie takes hold, we cannot start wringing our hands.
We cannot get a Goldilocks complex about whether everything is just right.
...
But they are still only human. They are not perfect. And like all of us, they will make mistakes.
But luckily, this is not just on them.
No, this is up to us—all of us—to be the solution we seek… it is up to all of us to be the antidote to all the darkness and division.
I don’t care how you identify politically… whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, independent, or none of the above… this is our time to stand up for what we know in our hearts is right.
To stand up not just for our basic freedoms but for decency and humanity… for basic respect, dignity, and empathy… for the values at the very foundation of this democracy.

Those two especially I find important. America is a land of through and through mutts and immigrants. Unless you're a Native that's who you are. It would do us all a lot of good to embrace it.
And fornthe foreseeable future, as long as MAGA runs the Republican party, every election is going to be against the very things our parents and grand parents went to war against.

That's a great post there, @sun rise. Americans are tired of Trump and his incessant trashing of our country.

It really is.

You know what image I can't shake of Ms. Obama? Her saying that "FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ADULT LIFE, I am really proud of my country."
This is exactly right. The hatred fir America is so clear but so many people are blind. I don't say stupid even though I wonder if that isnt the real problem

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

My gosh, the woman was accepted into Princeton for pete's sake, and was most likely the recipient of some form of affirmative action afterward.

Agree. Don't ever listen to this self serving snake in the grass.

The real truth comes from this honorable warrior who tells the actual truth that no one can deny on what has been done to our freedoms and liberty in this country....

So? She's also seen a side of America that you and I can only get a glimpse of.
Amd the point Michelle made that the article makes is a real thing. White Americans are the only ones in mainstream culture who get to be plain, regular jackwad Americans. Black people are black before anything else. Even Gabriel Iglesias mentioned in one his specials he had to go half way around the world to be considered an American comedian (even though that's exactly what he is). I also see it a lot where it doesn't matter where someone is from, if they appear Latin American they are Mexican. It's often the same for Asians. They aren't American either, they're Chinese and Japanese.

She went to Princeton and then went on to work for one of the largest law firms in Chicago, BEFORE becoming a First Lady. Sorry, I don't feel sorry for her one iota. And this is coming from someone who was glad to see a family that looked like hers living in the White House.

Who said anything about feeling sorry for her? Are her observations and experiences in college invalid because of this? Of course not! And she does speak truth of what really happens. I come from a poor background. When I was in college, especially in my honor's classes, there were times when I felt like Kenny McCormick from South Park, including a muffled voice and opinions that didn't matter because I didn't meet their monied requirements. She got something like that plus being black added on top of it.
