It's a sad commentary on society that people pay for this, yet millions of people in important working class jobs have a daily struggle to make ends meet.
It would be sadder if people lacked the liberty
to freely spend money on entertainment.
Detractors could travel to N Korea to see
the alternative.

True. Entertainment is subjective. It's the $ figures I dislike, as it eliminates many people who would like to watch such things but simply can't afford it.

Yes, of course. 30 million a season or more, in some cases. But some of these athletes are incredibly charitable as well, so that's a good thing. I don't know any place that gives stats on individuals. Still, compared to billionaires, it's a pittance. I asked an acquaintance the other day if he was a millionaire yet, and he jokingly said he'd never want to be one, because if he was, then he'd want to be a billionaire.

Yes, they are disgustingly overpaid for having careers that don't produce or demonstrably contribute anything to society. I always thought that was so messed up.
