Minimum wage

Seems there's lots of talk here about low pay.

Well the federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 and has not changed since 2009.

If either 'party' cares about pay people get why haven't they raised the federal minimum wage in over 15 years?
I care about people's pay.
But I prefer that the market determine it.
No one around here earns anything nearly
as low as the fed min wage.

The Federal minimum wage only applies in seven states. In all other states a higher state minimum wage supersedes it. There are about 870,000 people that earn the Federal minimum wage or less. (Most of those that earn less than the Federal minimum wage are under 20 and only earn less than it for a maximum of 90 days.) The total number of the employees is ~161,500,000. In other words only about ½ of one percent of employees earn the Federal minimum wage or less, or about 1 employee out of every 200. Furthermore most people earning the minimum wage only do so for a short period of time. Also the percentage is 13 times less than it was in 1979. “According to available data, the average length of time people spend earning minimum wage is relatively short, with most individuals moving on to higher paying jobs within a few years, though the exact duration can vary depending on factors like location, industry, and individual career progression; however, due to the lack of comprehensive data tracking individual wage trajectories over time, a precise average is difficult to pinpoint.”(AI Overview)

Given AI's track record, I would need to see something other than AI's "assessment" of the situation.

Yep. Some states chose to pay a higher minimum wage while the government's minimum wage has been stagnant for 15 years.

Found this...but its from 2021

"Currently, 34 states, territories and districts have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Five states have not adopted a state minimum wage: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Two states, Georgia and Wyoming, have a minimum wage below $7.25 per hour."

According to wiki, around 18 states have a $7.25 minimum wage in 2024

In January 2021 House Bill HR603 Raise the Wage Act of 2021 was introduced to the House with 202 cosponsors (all democrats.)
There was also an identical act introduced to the Senate at the same time, S.53, cosponsored by 37 Democrat Senators
Dems and repubs have had 15 years to raise it. And in those 15 years either party could have being both have held majority at different times.

Funny you mention Jan 2021. The dems had a trifecta from Jan 2021 to Jan 2023 so why didnt they pass it?

If you want the minimum wage raised, vote for people who will raise the minimum wage. Regardless of party.

I agree. I have been saying for a while, vote for the person, not the party.
But there was one candidate in the recent Presidential election who promised to raise the federal minimum wage. But every time you talk about that you treat it like it was some effort to "buy votes".

I don't think you know what you want, that or you don't understand how to use your vote to get it.

As the AI quote mentioned it used the best data available and it noted the lack of comprehensive data. If you have better data kindly provide it. If you don't then the AI assessment, despite any lackings, stands unanswered. The AI assessment was only regarding the length people stay at jobs that are minimum wages.
