Minor LDS question...

Hola! :)

I've noticed that many Mormon churches have a pronounced tower/steeple-thingie as part of the design, is this merely for aesthetics or are there deeper symbolic reasons for this?

(I'm planning on visiting a local LDS church and I've always found church architecture interesting, so any replies would be much appreciated)

I was always told that it points up towards heaven, symbolizing that Christ is resurrected and has ascended to heaven. I don't know if that is why they were put on there, but that is the only symbolism that I've heard of. It might just be to make them look like a church also.
