I have this trial version of word that came with my new computer. Do you know if I can just buy an activation number (like on the internet or something) or do I have to buy all that softwar?

I think you have to buy it :( Microsoft is evil like that. You can easily get other freeware programs that are just as good as Word, though. Gimme a bit and I can find a couple if you're interested.

I know there are some illegal alternatives to purchasing the software, but even downloading a keygen program runs a high risk of getting a virus. I don't recomend it for that reason.
Personally, I just stick to Wordpad. It has everything but spellcheck, and it comes standard on all computers that have a version of Windows for the OS. If it becomes neccessary to use spellcheck, I go to a website that has a forum with spell check, copy past the wordpad text to the forum, use spell check, fix the errors, then close it without posting.

Jensa and Feathers - OpenOffice is definitely a good one. I pretty much just needed word because I had a bunch of word documents with specific formatting, and other programs would not keep that formatting. OpenOffice seems to. Thanks.

Luke Wolf - Thank you for your advice, too. I was kind of deciding if I should go for one of those methods, but I guess you decided me against it. Thanks.
