Mob movies - overhyped or great entertainment?

I recently watched Goodfellas for my 2nd time all the way through. I've seen the Godfather trilogy though was a late bloomer on that, seeing it about 30 years after initial release. I've seen Scarface at least once. I've seen Donnie Brasco twice. I've seen the Untouchables 2 to 3 times. And only other one that comes to mind is Casino which I initially read the script before seeing the film.

You'd think I am a fan of this genre, but alas I am not. I think mob movies are overhyped and I still don't get the fascination with them.

Is it because some audience members somewhat wish to emulate the mob way of life? Is it just the compelling drama of gun play and organized crime? Is it the high caliber of talented actors? Or what? What do you think it is that make these movies very popular?

My take on mob characters remains fairly consistent. They come off like tough guys, but it really seems like they are cowards who are grossly overcompensating for lack of class. They seem like hoodlums and in my viewings, I don't see anything real different between mob thugs and inner city type thugs, though it seems like silent racism attempts to draw significant line between the two types of gangstas.

I generally watch the films because of the high caliber of talent, and because the film has been hyped up so much, and because I'm always a little curious what US audiences are attracted to in the morality play. I'm almost always cheering for the cops in these sort of films which isn't the case in other movies I watch. Wasn't cheering for the cops in Reservoir Dogs. And neither was I in Usual Suspects. But in mob movies, I look forward to the mob guys being taken down either by their own silly in battles or by the cops / feds. And so of all the movies I named at the top, it ought to be no surprise that the ones I liked the most are Untouchables and Donnie Brasco.

I'm curious what others have to say about this genre. On this topic, if you disagree with my take and love the film, I may have questions, but won't debate as I realize I am in minority on this one.

I actually love the Godfather and enjoy many mafia themed films. They have a lot of suspense and good acting and are often based on actual events.
I also liked the Untouchables and Donnie Brasco, and Scarface.

I tried watching Godfather, and couldn't follow it. I literally couldn't tell one character from another (except for the Godfather himself, of course), nor did I have any idea what they were talking about. I saw Scarface (the original 1930s one), and couldn't follow it, either. I don't think I've seen any others.

Mob movies contain many aspects to like. All the movies you mentioned, with the exception of the Untouchables, are personal favorites for me. If you take The Godfather trilogy for example, you might note its not just telling a story of a thug, or a criminal who comes off as tough and menacing etc.. sometimes there is much more to it than that.

If you look at Vito Corleone's character, and what has happened to him, what he decided based on that, and what he wanted for his children, you'd realize its more of a tragedy than anything else. The same with his son's character, Michael.

The general message of the film itself, or what i personally get from the film, after showing all the struggle both Vito and Michael went through, and seeing the results after all this hard work to obtain something and prevent another, is as powerful message as i've seen in any other film.

Add to that factors like incredible acting and directing, great suspense, action and drama, and the interest in watching the details of the lives of these type of people, makes the whole experience extremely fascinating and enjoyable.

Can you name any others (that you enjoyed) that aren't on my list?

The Departed was excellent.

I've seen Casino but can't really remember it.

Goodfellas was good.

I know I've watched and even own others, but I'd have to go downstairs to see the titles and I am just faaarrrr too lazy right now :p

Mob movies can be great, as are many already listed.
It's a tad outside the genre, but one of the greatest is The Usual Suspects.
Similarly (but not a movie), we have The Wire....the greatest of all in my book.

The Departed was excellent.

Yeah, I thought of "The Departed" over night as I just watched that in last few weeks for my first time. I'm surprised at myself for not mentioning it in OP.

To me, this was another example of overhyped. Acting caliber was obviously incredibly high, which given that it is Scorcese film doesn't surprise me, but still it has lots of A-list talent in it. And the premise of the story is very good, but the whole mob BS that is plot of all these narratives leads to inevitable sequence that everyone soon is going to try and kill everyone else. Not because these are actually classy people like the subculture wishes to purport, but because they have no real class and it always has been about 'each man is on his own, and to heck with 'family' when things start to spiral downward. I'm in this for me and will take down Johnny or Big Tony, my blood brothers, if push comes to shove.'

With The Departed I was very glad a cop won in the end. Without that, and I may have hated the film overall (for various reasons). With that in there, I found it tolerable and something I'd recommend for the star power alone.

Dicaprio is my fav from that film. I realize Nicholson is as huge as they come for actors that are currently living, but Dicaprio to me is a cut above the rest of these actors. He is on par with a Daniel Day Lewis in terms of acting. Both are great at presenting vastly different character traits in roles they play.
