At 10 years old he can't decide to get a tattoo....but can't a 10 year old decide to take hormone drugs?

What am I missing?

"HIGHLAND, N.Y. (Gray News) – A mother and a tattoo artist in New York state are facing charges after a 10-year-old boy was allowed to get a large, permanent tattoo on his body.

According to Town of Lloyd police, 33-year-old Crystal Thomas was arrested Oct. 4 and charged with endangering the welfare of a child for allowing her young son to get a tattoo.

The tattoo artist, 20-year-old Austin Smith, was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree unlawfully dealing with a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police did not provide details about the tattoo but said it is large and on the child’s arm.

Thomas and Smith were both released from custody on appearance tickets and are expected in court Thursday and Nov. 3, respectively."

Hormones are reversible, with minimum overall damage. At least that’s what the current data says.
They’re used in medicine even. No seriously, they’re used to treat certain forms of cancer

Pretty sure getting a tattoo removed (let alone the tattoo itself) is rather painful even still. And can cause permanent scarring if one is not careful.

That said, I got my ears pierced before I was even a year old due to cultural reasons. So I mean I dunno if I can really point any fingers lol

I've got tattoos before. In my 20's. They aren't endangering anyone, and nobody should be arrested, but I do find it is in poor taste for the mother to allow her ten year old boy to get it. I don't know.

One is a purely cosmetic procedure; the other is sometimes determined by doctors to be a necessary treatment.

They're completely different situations, although I do believe that in general, children should only undergo complicated treatments, including hormone therapy and any types of involved surgery, after thorough evaluation by more than one professional and discussion with the kid's parents.

Does tattoo removal leave scars...

"How you treat your skin, and its condition, affects tattoo removal as much as when you got the tattoo. Though most people find that there’s little to no scarring from the process, it does happen.

More frequently occurring in those with darker skin tones, scarring can come about due to a loss of pigmentation. But this will likely come back over time and become less visible.

Is it painful getting a tattoo removed...

Rest easy — while laser tattoo removal can hurt, chances are it won't hurt as much as getting the tattoo did. Tattoo removal pain is comparable to the pain of a bad sunburn, and the laser pulses feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin. Cringe-worthy, yes, but tolerable.

Oh I get it now.

A doctor wasn't being paid.

No, a tattoo artist was. I'm not sure how that's relevant, since any service rendered to someone else typically costs money. You and I don't work for free either.
It undermines a doctors surgical exclusivity. Plus they need that new luxury BMW.

Getting a tattoo isn't a surgery, and of course performing surgery is exclusive to licensed professionals (i.e., doctors). Do we really want backstreet surgeries and intrusive makeshift procedures to be legal?

I don't like it, however I think it is a low level issue. In the end you cannot replace parents with government, and governments cannot manufacture families. I don't like what this parent did. I think she's crazy, but she is the parent not I.

I've no problem with a town outlawing tats on children. I think a national law would be too tyrannical.

Of course it's in the Great People's Republic of New York.

Are you surprised? I'm not.
