More than 80 teens and staffers at an Illinois summer camp got Covid-19

More than 80 teens and adult staffers from a Central Illinois summer camp tested positive for Covid-19 in an outbreak that has impacted people across three states, officials said.

The Crossing Camp in Schuyler County held in mid-June did not check vaccination status for campers or staffers, and masks were not required indoors at the camp, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said in a news release.

The Crossing Camp has not responded to calls, email or Facebook messages left by CNN on Monday and Tuesday.

All campers and staff were eligible for vaccination, although "IDPH is aware of only a handful of campers and staff receiving the vaccine," the department said Monday.

...

DPH said that at least two individuals from the camp also attended a nearby conference, which resulted in 11 additional positive cases of Covid-19.

...

The week-long camp from June 13-17 was designed was for 8th graders -- through graduating seniors.

An upcoming camp created for fourth- and fifth-grade students has been postponed to August due to the outbreak, according to a message posted on its official website.

That is a lot of positives from one camping trip of "8th graders -- through graduating seniors."

A group that has long been claimed to not get COVID....

This kind of news serves to demonstrate that when it comes to public health during a pandemic, there is no such thing as "both sides" or "doing what one thinks is right for themselves"--with very specific and few exceptions (e.g., for people who genuinely can't wear masks or get vaccinated due to health issues). There are only scientifically sound decisions and misinformed ones that have considerable potential to harm others.

Sadly, this is unsurprising given that it was a Christian camp. The vast majority of COVID denialism and anti-vaxx sentiment that I've seen has been from Christians. Our local Christian radio stations here spew those things virtually non-stop, 24/7.

There's a certain irony to Christians providing an opportunity for the virus to evolve further, but given the gravity of the situation and how it will cost people their lives, I find it hard to laugh about.

I find it more to be the Christian right. My assessment comes from that a lot of the US is Christian, and the US seems to have met some good vaccine goals in the past despite of this.

Definitely. But the data indicates that much of the decline among US Christians is from mainstream, non-conservative denominations. I've been wondering if that would result in US Christianity being dominated by conservatives, and from what I can tell, that may be happening.

I think the above is a really excellent post -- I wish everybody here would read it.

Well they are immune now.

Does anyone know how many of those who acquired the virus actually got sick enough to need hospitalisation?

Young people are not usually affected badly by the virus (as the article mentions) but since even those who are vaccinated can still get the virus and spread it, what is the point of all the hype? Millions of people who have recovered should now have natural immunity. No vaccination should be necessary.

We hear about the variants like “Delta” being more contagious, but is it more deadly? We saw what happened in India but that had more to do with poor medical attention, lack of hygiene, poor education, overpopulation and a lack of oxygen supplies...also seen in countries with similar circumstances.

All we seem to hear now are how many cases there are, not how sick people are getting from these variants. Most just said it was like the flu and that they recovered quite well.

Are we really hearing the whole story? I have family members who, all in one household contracted the virus (UK stain) but only one member needed hospitalisation. The rest recovered like they would have from the ordinary flu, the youngest not even very sick.

Are hospitals still overrun with dying patients? If those who have recovered have acquired natural immunity, then why do they need the vaccine? If they had not acquired natural immunity, they would not have recovered...that is how the immune system works. Those who have not recovered well, or who died, usually had underlying health issues that the virus exacerbated....meaning that their death was not from the virus but from complications due to the virus. Are these people included in the “death from Covid” stats? Is it overinflated?

I don’t think most people have any idea how much profit these vaccines will generate for the companies who are providing the information about the “safety” of their vaccines.

“Love of money is the root of all evil”.....so I have suspicions that I am seeing the result of that, rather than concern for public safety. But that is just my opinion.
