Muslim Women's Ideal Character

croak

Trickster
That Muslim women should be exactly as described? :p

Unbelievers think that being emotional is an important part of the human character.
So by that definition, I am an unbeliever. I thought it was scientific fact that emotions help us make decisions and so forth. Thus, it is important.

Not much to debate here.

Well, speaking from the angle of emotions, those Muslim women in Palestine who have had their sons and on occasion daughters murdered seem fairly emotional to me. The TV pics always show them smacking their heads with both hands in the Muslim way, bouncing on the spot and screaming aloud on the streets and @ funerals, proclaiming Allah's vengeance (usually). It would appear grief is expressed in a profoundly more emotional way in this Islamic tradition than in the West.

I like this thread because is raises some issues I take very seriously. Muslim women are indoctrinated to believe men are superior and the first-chosen of Allah, just as any patriarchal God must assert the dominance of one sex over the other in order to obtain the foreseen stability of religious society. Therefore, women must conform to the ideal female-template provided for by the example of the Quran. No dissent is allowed. Typically, the ideal of the perfect Islamic woman is too difficult to live up to in reality.

I look forward to the posts of Laila, Fullyveiled Muslimah and other Islamic women on RF to see what they have to say: that is, if the notion of the Islamic woman is worthwhile @ all and can be defended.

Regardless, I suspect they will try, but it should be interesting...

If they are brought up to think that, it is not because of, or even based in, Islam.

How so? What you are suggesting is a massive gulf between Quranic Islam and Islamic culture. Is that it? Because the facts are that women are considered inferior and subject to restraints upon that basis. How about the Kazakhstani saying "God, Man, Horse, Dog, Woman, Rat". Would you say it is un-Islamic to percieve the worth of Woman in that particular order?

I would take your post more seriously if that was a Quranic saying than a Kazakhstani saying. Yes, there is a huge difference between Islam and the culture of Middle Eastern countries. Hasn't this been covered ad nauseum by now?

Couldn't help it, the fireworks are too noisy - perhaps I'm getting old! or Perhaps godlike thought of me.

Muslim women are individuals, Muslim women are human beings.......
Muslim women are indoctrinated to think men are superior....yeah right, no man is more superior to me! equal footing - yeah I can live with that.

The 'ideal character' if there is such a thing applies to men and women. The ideal character from the teachings of the Quran is that of a good human being.
oh, silly me I forgot women are half of a man, or less than half, in Islam according to some ignorants - forgive me.

My point was the tribesmen in the country from which the saying comes have found their misogyny combines splendidly with the Quran and Islam. How is this so?

Perhaps they are illiterate or their ability to understand is challenged.
However, in my personal opinion they are just plain and simple **** wits.

..........and this is a stereotype as not all men, from said country, have the same mentality!

I agree, I did not want to sterotype, only provide an example of the mentality some derive from the faith. :)

Why don't you start pulling up some evidence that women are inferiour from the Qur'an and then we'll discuss this further?

Faith..Hahaha........more like 'lack of it'.
No faith teaches you to treat women like rubbish.

That is not my purpose here, my point should be obvious from the previous posts. I did not say the Quran represents women as inferior, only that Islamic culture traditionally treats them as such.

Almost every culture has treated women like crap- this isn't unique to Middle Eastern (NOT Islamic) cultures- why are you setting this up as that?

Christinaity, in its many forms, and Judiasm have trampled upon many notions of equality or at least even balance between the sexes. I think this points to something beyond religion (ie. what Man makes of God, not what is God) and I'm tired of seeing all these trials here of Islam. Yes, there are crazies in it, even a lot. But there sure are a ton of crazy Christians in America and crazy Hindus in India!

Is THAT where that is from?

This is why I treat all these threads degrading Islam as a joke anymore...
