Mutual Exclusivity

It seems that, since the beginning of time, the "church" has made strives for everyone to see the "church" and it's many religions mutually exclusive to science. They have made strives to make scientists heretics. Why can't there be a physicist priest? or a Sunday-school-teaching nuclear engineer?

I get so angry when the church shuts down every scientific breakthrough out there. Is it really any mystery as to why most scientists try to disprove religion? the church picked a fight with a very big enemy. Name any one person who doesn't have a laptop, computer, cellphone or iPod. Can't? Guess what, everyone has in their hands scientific breakthroughs. Wonder who will win this one.

1) "The church," by which I assume you mean Christianity, is not equivalent to "religion."
2) Science is not the innocent victim of this falsely manufactured conflict.

...what does this have to do with evolution and creationism? That only seems like a fraction of the debate you wish to start.

Nicolaus Copernicus and Gregor Mendel are two of the most famous names in the history of science. Both were Catholic clerics. The are hundreds of others. Have a look into it.

That's not the case at all.

Manufactured?

There may not be conflict but on the side of religion there is mindless indoctrination about the evil that is science and evolution. 3 of them came to my door yesterday evening and invited me to a "lies of evolution" presentation.

When it comes to scientific indoctrination, I fail to see how teaching facts is harmful.

Science does not "disprove religion".
Science only replaces old dogmas with newly discovered facts.

The only conflict is when certain scriptural literalists ignore the facts in favor of intentional ignorance in order to justify their faith.

Yes. As you admit, the fields themselves are not actually in conflict. It's just that certain of their adherents refuse to live in peace.

Case in point.

Where did I say anything of the sort?

Actually the trend is for modern religions to embrace science and attempt to harmonize with established facts. Only a handful of denominations espouse anti-scientific views.

This is different than having valid moral questions about certain scientific procedures like embryonic stem cell research.

Using broad bogyman terms like "the church" (insert spooky music) doesn't help your argument.

Many scientists did and do their work because they believe that it will give them a greater understanding of Gods work. The conflict is not so much between religion and science but religious organisations and science over who is considered the truth holder.

We owe Carl Linaeus a huge debt of gratitude for the work he did in organising life into groups on the basis of morphology. What drove him to do this was a desire to better understand what he saw as Gods creation and while cladistics has grown the system he contributed greately towards is still very useful today.

...

Good post. I wish more people would understand that. Science doesn't disprove God (or your deity of choice) and belief in said deity doesn't render science nonsense. There isn't any conflict between the two for the majority of people and groups.

There should be no conflict for atheists, and for most theists science compliments faith.

Yeh I totally read things wrong, my apologies.

In our history the big enemy was the church and they did hinder science for centuries though it isn't being hindered as much as it used to. Politics are the source right now where religion can hinder science like when government doesn't allow stem cell research for example. Or no don't build a hadron collider you'll blow up the world. Drama queens!
