My Cat's Cat

Recently, I've observed a new phenomenon with my cats...

It seems my cat, Lamar, is trying to adopt another cat.

It started one night when Lamar wouldn't come in(he's indoor/outdoor for health reasons). That wasn't typical, and the weather wasn't great. I looked and looked, but couldn't find him.

The next morning I went out to try again. I found him in an alley neighbor's garage, cackling, purring and milk-treding the ground, but refusing to leave the garage. Weird. I got nearer, and he started going deeper into the garage, and popping back and meowing(an indicator I've learned with cats that means "I want to show you something"). I got close enough to grab him, and saw... another cat. Terrified and scruffy, this guy was obviously a feral, and for a long time, with burrs in the fur and torn ears. He ran from me, but I left him some food anyways.

In the last few weeks, Lamar has been working hard to get the cat closer to our house, and to show him we're okay. We were sitting on the porch one day, and Lamar came up with his friend. Instinctively, the cat turned to run, but Lamar started cackling(he has a very strange meow), and got into our laps, purring and rubbing his face on us and staring at the other cat. We threw out some food, and the cat did come and eat in front of us, with Lamar watching proudly. Then the cat looked at us, meowed, rubbed against our legs and wanted to be petted!

The cat is still quite feral, but he's been coming and asking for food if he sees us out. He stares into our porch, but won't come on(Lamar is still working on that).

I've never seen a cat try to domesticate another cat like this before. (Lamar was a born feral, but caught and brought in quite early.)

Then you have an indeed unique cat. Mine goes crazy whenever he sees another cat. Once he got into a fight with the neighbor's cat. I separated them and ended up all scratched and bitten. Now he sits at home and I don't let him out anymore.

I've found that when you go from having a few cats in an area to several cats in an area, behavior changes greatly.

When I had a few cats, the instinct with a new cat was typically to fight and quarrel upon meeting a new cat. Now that I've passed that 'few' category, the cats are curious but friendly to new arrivals most of the time, provided the new arrival doesn't attack.

I have one cat I refer to as the 'welcome wagon', as he tends to purr and try to clean up any newbies.

My cat accepted and adopted the new cat early last year right away. He doesn't seem to mind her company. The dogs were cool with her, too. Everybody was like, "come on in, welcome home."

Me either. But wholly cow is this cute. I feel bad for the ferla kitty, but can you take on an 11th?

Not to go off topic (I just like sharing cuteness).

One of my boys, who usually isn't a cuddler has been very lovey today.

Here he is rubbing on my face.

I had a picture of him passed out in my lap after this. But it seems no matter how much I crop it, I can't get the image to be small enough for RF.

They really are. Cat stereotypes baffle me. They so seldom match, at least not in my crew.
Show me a cat who isn't about as stubborn as I am.:p
My mom's cat, I don't know if it's because she yells at him and treats him like a pet (and strictly so), but he's started attacking her (especially latching onto her leg and biting) and acting extra cute and adorable for me.:joycat:

I imagine what will happen will be what happened at the old place, before we moved and had to relocate the ferals from there with us:

He'll probably come here and eat on a daily basis. He'll probably come to be friends, and he'll sit with us on the porch and play with us in the yard. By next winter, it'll be to a point where we can force him indoors in case of dangerous weather. But, I imagine he'll be basically outdoors. If he appears ill or hurt, I'll have to take him to the vet... my conscious couldn't handle it otherwise. May Bast provide for any expenditures that may pop up... :praying:

Its possible he could disappear completely at any given point. Its also possible he'll waltz right in the front door and sit down. However, I'm betting on the above scenario, based on past experiences with other ferals. Some are just 'drive bys'. Some are occasional guests. I think this one would have fallen into that category if Lamar wasn't so bent on keeping him nearby.

These are just predictions based on past experiences.

@JustGeorge that's great George. Good on Lamar, I've never heard of a feline social worker before.

Although my brother's cat once brought home a stray cat that they wound up keeping.

That's cute! It gives a whole new meaning to "look what the cat drug in".

What a beautiful story.

This is irrelevant, but I wanted to post it somewhere.
Our 2 new cats are Lela & Amy.
But Lela talks, but Amy never does.
I'd like to re-name them Penn & Teller,
but it's too late.
BTW, they like to look out the door when
the outdoor cats, Spotty & Cow Kitty come
to eat goodies I set out for them. Unlike
prior cats, there's no hostility, ie, embiggened
tail fur accompanied by restrained yowling.

You have a Cow Kitty? We do, too! His name was Yodel for many years, and one day one of the kids randomly started calling him "Cow" and it stuck.

We're calling this new guy Yort. We've mistaken him for our Troy several times, to the point where he turns his head to being called 'Troy'. Yort is just Troy backwards.
