My (Christian) Country Tis Of Thee

So, my wife and I are visiting family down in St. Louis. I usually wake early, so I thought I'd head to Starbucks and then swing by the store to pick up some wine for dinner -- only to be told by the clerk that they could not sell me wine until 9:00 AM on Sunday. It's apparently a (Christian) 'blue' law here in Missouri, and the fact that I'm an Illinois Jew seemed of little consequence.
... sweet land of liberty, of the I sing. :)
Have a great Fourth of July Weekend. (and Shalom).

When I lived in Baltimore MD, no big stores could be open on Sunday.
It appears there was an exception for tiny ones though.

Move to California, you can buy anything you want on Sunday. ;) Most stores are open on Sunday, Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, and Groundhog Day. :D Just don't whine about the high prices we have here. :) (we pay for our sunshine, according to my macro economics class.:tigger:

You can't buy alcohol (beer and wine) before noon on Sunday, and you can only buy hard liquor from the state stores here in NC.

Nothing like the state making alcohol consumption a government policy issue. :sarcastic

All in all though, I guess I should feel really lucky that my local store does stock a single kosher wine. I mean variety is so overrated sometimes, ya know?

The UK used to take advantage of the Jewish law as they were able to open their shops on a Sunday, provided they were shut on the Sabbath. While Christian shop keepers could not.

Since Sunday opening laws were relaxed they have had no advantage.

When I lived in Hampstead I used to queue at a Jewish Bakers early on a Sunday morning to get fresh crusty bread... the best in the UK. (The NW3 area is almost solid Jewish.)

That depends entirely on the wine. A good deal of kosher wine is horrible and one's ability to find decent kosher wine is even more limited if it must be mevushal. Thankfully, the Chicago area has more than a few stores with a fairly large kosher selection. (I really Ike Yogev.)

In Colorado Springs, liquor stores cannot open on Sunday.
Phil, ya need to get out more on Sundays. That law was changed a couple of years ago.;)

Now it is just the Grocery Stores up in arms about only being able to sell 3.2 beer.

Are these silly laws more frequent the further south you go or something? So strange about Missouri. Weird alcohol laws, cigarettes are like uber cheap, and fireworks galore. I live in the southeast section of Iowa and many people will cross the state border to get cigs and fireworks, but I guess they have to cross up here to get their booze :p

What is really surprising is that their are still dry counties dotting the south and northeast in the US.
