My Confession:

Druidus

Keeper of the Grove
I must confess that I have been a victim of bias. My own.

I have held unconscious biases for some time. Against Christians, because of my experiences as one and damages I recieved, against average people, because of my personality disorders, and against several entire sections of the populace, because of opinion.

Having consciously recognized this fact, I am now trying to rid myself of these biases. It is not easy-going. But until I get rid of them, please bear with me.

Have you studied Chritianity and irregardless if so or not are your proposing that you should ? I had some real anti-christian days in my past too. Learning about their religion helped alot over time.

I'm very glad you've been able to make this breakthrough, Druidus! *hugs* I cheer on anyone that can jump a hurdle such as this!

It may just be my perception, but RF has really helped heal some of my own attitudes toward other faiths, through the overwhelming kindness of the many people here (of all religions).

Good to hear it.
I am sure if any of us can give help and encouragement we will.
May be you will end up as a christian tolerant Druid. Or even a Druid tolerant Christian:bounce

I suppose there's a bit of that in all of us; The realization of it is what counts - and you've taken a large step.;)

I wish you luck.
I will admit getting rid of anti-Christian, or anti-anything, is not easy. There are some good people out thier who are Christian in this world that aren't RF members.

yep, were tracking them down now, however, i must report the hunt for them goes ill favoured, they are more illusive than we first anticipated - for christians, they have a really irritating knack of moving big obstacles put in their way (like big bolders), raising dead armies, and walking on the water that divides england and france

sorry, that got a bit random toward the end

although i can actually picture it now - you track one of them down, you ask him one question, bearing in mind that if he is teh good christian, he will tel the truth, if he isnt, he will lie - what do you ask him?

sorry, damn tangents! they get the better of me late at night :D

ill stop typing now shall i?

It's a long path to true tolerance, Dru. Sounds like you've made a good start by recognizing the problem. Don't stop walking the path: it brings its own rewards.

I've been going through the same thing. Unfortunately, my bias against one religion in particular has been confirmed and strengthened through discussions on the forums. I really don't know how to go about getting rid of these feelings.

Thanks for your concern. I guess I haven't figured out how someone can get over a bias when he or she feels it is justified?

A bias is often based on one sided or incomplete information. When that's the case, a good counter for it is to seek out and study new and different information about the thing we have a bias about.

Which is part of the reason why I came here. Unfortunately, I guess it didn't help.

Well put. I firmly believe that people should activly seek out and learn about those things that they fear don't understand. To a point anyways. I'm not saying someone who has a fear of being shot to go get shot. Just don't be afraid of learning about things you don't believe in.

Though there is only so far you can go with book learning. To really overcome sometimes requires a change in thought process and that's not always an easy thing to do. For me debating and discussing things with people from all over helps the most. That is why I am here.

Jonny, what is your bias towards?
I don't really feel comforable saying specifically, but I can tell you generally. Throughout my life I have developed biases against certain Christian sects because I believe they preach hate and intollerance towards people who believe differently than they do. This hate and intoleranece isn't always directed at me, but I recognize that there are patterns of this with members from certain sects. These experiences in my life have created biases in my head against these churches. It's something I've tried to work on, but sometimes I feel justified with my feelings so it's hard to motivate myself to try and change.

If it's a certain member, please remember that you can use the report feature, or PM any of the staff!
It is usually taken care of eventually without me having to say anthing, but thanks. :) Most of them are quickly added to my ignore list so I can go on with my life as if they never existed (I do remove them every now and then to see if they still as they were).

Speaking of reporting, I'd like to apologize to anyone I have reported by mistake when I was trying to give them frubals... Dang clicking finger! :banghead3

I will admit, I am still slightly biased against Christianity, but not nearly as bad as I used to be. The Christian members here and a few good ones I know in real life really helped to lessen it.
