My favorite quote from Buddha

He sat beneath the bodhi tree nearly starving to death, suffering a joyful peaceful martyrdom, waiting for enlightenment and awakening to rise in his heart. I admire that determination and am inspired by it. He found enlightenment through fasting, Penance, meditation, inner silence, and Stillness. His answers lied within. If we want Enlightenment, we have to withdraw from the fast paced world and be still...

When asked if he was a God, he responded "I am awake"...

Do you have a favorite quote from Buddha? He's my favorite mortal to walk the earth...his teachings, don't lead people to violence, judging or condemning people of other faiths and practices. He was a deeply peaceful and patient and humble soul... He left his Palace , luxury , and sensual pleasure to live in complete poverty and suffering, where he found true Joy.

I love Siddhartha Gautama!

Could you have compassion for all things except desire? Why have something you don't want? What about the spontaneous wish for buddhahood?

He was referring to desires that are worldly, vain, and temporary, and come from vanity and carnal passion...

Desire for wisdom and enlightenment doesn't fall into the context of what he was referring to as desire

Sounds like you've stumbled onto the "fake Buddha quotes" website, while they do convey the idea of the Buddha's message, very few of those are actual quotes of the Buddha from the Pali scriptures, good sayings nonetheless.

I've read the quote in the Op in many of the writings about Buddha's enlightenment *shrugs*

The OP quote is about the only one that sounds like it may be genuine, there are a lot of fake Buddha quotes on the internet, I'm on a Buddhist forum and the topic comes up from time to time.

I'm guessing some of the Buddha's teachings were passed down orally and never made it into the scriptures...

For example, the Bible makes it clear that most of the teachings and actions of Christ are not actually written down or made it into scripture

Not all of Buddhas quotes made it into the scriptures... So who knows, he may have said those things... Anyway they accurately portray his message and attitude none the less

we have like 370 volumes of the Buudha's scriptures and, no, those other quotes don't sound anything like the Buddha, they're made up quotes based on some modern person's interpretation of the Buddha's teaching.

Could you share some of his teachings?

They arent fake quotes but quotes inspired by those who may have taken interest in buddhism. Nothing wrong with that if they didnt cite it as from The Buddha himself.

There are over thousands of suttas and sutras a lot more than biblical scripture. Just looking at rows and rows of the Pali Canon alone at our university tells me this.

Also, The Buddha has a style in talk that many buddha quotes dont have. Remember. Buddhism isnt like christianity. Authenticity is besides the point. If that be the case we would toss all the people who wrote the sutras after The Buddha passed away. Its inspirational. Not all from The Buddha.

I'm wondering, sorry if i'm derailing the thread, whether anyone finds something said by Siddhartha Gautama controversial.

Lots of folks critical of Jesus and Muhammad etc. Are there any such criticisms of the Buddha?

The Buddha was extreme and his asceticism almost killed him.... For many people trying to live as he did, it would have been suicide... Other than that, I don't really see much controversy in the quotes that I've read from him... No, that doesn't derail the thread, thank you for the contribution

Not from Buddha, but from a Buddhist:

"Mere suffering exists, no sufferer is found;

The deeds are, but no doer of the deeds is there;

Nibbāna is, but not the man that enters it;

The path is, but no traveler on it is seen."

Certainly. Go to any Christian or Muslim apologist. ;)
