There he is....the guy who used to help me maintain my computer system. He turned out to be a serial killer (although they only convicted him on a couple murders). What bozo moved this guy out of the high security unit?

Wow, how does it feel to know a serial killer?
I find it interesting to be so familiar with that aspect of society. How often do people get to know a sociopath, & be aware of this? (I bet that more people know them, but are unaware of it.)

Yeah, from what I've read, it seems like it's inevitable that we've all known a sociopath in our lives, whether we realized it or not. I've often looked back at the people I've known and tried to figure out if any of them might have been sociopathic.

I know a couple of people with questionable ethics and lack of empathy. Fortunately, they've always treated me alright and I've given neither of them reason to dislike me. One of them, we've agreed is probably a sociopath, but he's a friend and we're on good terms.

Of course, not all sociopaths are evil. I should be more careful about that.

Yeah, I was thinking about this as I wrote my post. A lack of empathy and such does not automatically mean that a person wants to be violent. That's partly why im not worried about the people I know.

I observe that I'm rather challenged in the empathy department.....but I have a little.

My mother is a diagnosed sociopath and trust me, she was one of the horrid, 'evil' ones. Once you have met one, I think you start 'seeing' them everywhere. When you meet and are involved with a true sociopath, it is an experience unforgettable. She made my life hell for 18 years until I finally moved out. Generally, not people you want to meet. Ever. Females do differ in behaviour slightly from males though, which is understandable. They are the most manipulative, bare faced liars you will ever come across. Emotions are mostly all faked, apart from when their ego is torn at, then they will really go for you. Very parasitic, expect you to be their little run-around. Get away, get away.

Yeah, me too. It troubled me when I was a teenager and realized that I didn't actually care about other people's feelings or problems so much. I have a pretty set code of ethics, though, and I definitely have intellectual empathy, though I may sometimes lack emotional empathy. It really just comes and goes.

That would be rough! Yes, it was an eye opener to look back on my dealings with Steve (as I knew him...one of his many identities). He is a very significant data point in my view of sociopaths.

I've known a friend's mother who was similar to that. She is at least a borderline personality.

I actually did know a guy in college who is probably a sociopath, now that I think about it. He was pretty courteous when you interacted with him, but there were stories of him doing some highly questionable things and really blowing up on some people when he didn't like them. He threatened to kill someone, once.

Yeah but how was he in the IT department.
He was pretty good.

He also did some work in the home of a gal who worked for me back then. Since she spent time alone with him, she found it particularly creepy that he was a vicious murderer. (He did much more than was made public, including beating a little girl so badly she never recovered to the point she could feed herself.) Naturally, I seized the opportunity for some fun. I wrote her a letter in his name, saying that I was away dealing with some personal difficulties, & was anxious to come back & get a leg up on the competition, give her a cutthroat deal, & lend her a hand. (He had cut up the people found in coolers in his trunk in Utah.)

Here is a list of possible indications of a sociopath, but I notice that lots of people who aren't sociopaths have some of these traits: How to Spot a Sociopath | Psychology Today

I've looked at some of these before. Like I mentioned, I've tried to figure out if I've ever known any sociopaths.

Using those criteria, I haven't been able to think of anyone. I think I've been very fortunate to be surrounded by some pretty good people in my life.

The one trait, maintaining uninterrupted eye contact, is a particularly useful one, especially when combined with not blinking. I use this on a lawyer I'm battling because it unnerves him. He's a dishonest b*****, & to interrupt his train of thought weakens his tactics.

Oh man, I once had a conversation with someone who did that. It was the most intense and unpleasant discussion of World of Warcraft I've ever had. The dude just looked me straight in the eyes the entire freaking time...

I can't over stress how stressful that was.

It doesn't help that I don't like to keep eye contact when I talk with people anyway.

I like eye contact, but the menacing kind is a lot of work.
During a deposition, the lawyer actually complained bitterly that I was trying to intimidate him. My lawyer responded by advising him not to look at me. That deposition cost me several thousand in legal fees, but at least I have fond memories of his whining about it....& it's in the transcript.
