SARAJEVO - Across Italy, she's known simply as the Bosnian Lady and now Nadira Sehovic, a 34-year-old Muslim from Sarajevo, has been awarded the Star of Solidarity by the Italian president.

Sehovic, who has been a fixture of the Italian media for more than a decade following her high-profile reports in the Italian language during the Bosnian war, is as famous for her charisma and unusual laugh as she is for her trend-setting fashion sense and journalism credentials.

The Star of Italian Solidarity is an important decoration handed by the President of the Republic of Italy to foreign nationals who are engaged in promoting Italian culture and language throughout the world or for their exceptional contributions in domain of humanitarian activity or social solidarity.

Nadira Sehovic was decorated with the Star for merits during the Serbian, Montenegrin and Croatian aggressions against Bosnia, when she provided for contacts betwen Italian intellectuals such as Federico Bugno, Bernardo Valli, Dacia Maraini, Adriano Sofri and Erri De Luca with the intellectual circles in Bosnia, as well as in the postwar period, when she kept these contacts strong thanks to her translations of books by Antoni Tabucchi and Angel Cannavacciuoli to Bosnian language, and the books of Marko Vesovic and Abdulah Sidran to Italian language.
