What are all of the names of god that you can think of?

"Think of"? Names of gods that I know by heart, or names that I can look up? Personal names for independent gods, or collective names for groups of gods, or (near) synonyms for 'god'?

It is said that there are 99 names for Allah (swt) in the Qur'an. There seems to be 72 Kabbalistic names for god.

I'll start with names of the Christian God.

There are lots of names in the OT. Elohim (literally, the Gods!) and Yahweh have been mentioned; others coming to my mind are El (God in singular), El Shaddai (the most strong one), El Elyom (the highest one), Adonai (My Lord). Jews often use expressions like Ha-Shem ('the Name') or spell out the name ("yod-he-waw-he") to avoid pronouncing it.

In Indo-European languages: God (Engl., Dutch), Gud (Scandinavian), Gott (German), Dieu (French), Dios (Spanish), Deus (Portuguese), Bog (Slavonic languages), Ishvar or Parameshvar (Hindi), Xudâ (Persian; x like in Scots loch; also used by Muslims in Iran and India besides Allah), Kyrios (Greek).

In Arabic, it is Allah in the Bible, and Chinese has shàngdì, which can be seen as 'Lord God'. In Finnish, he is Jumala or Isä Jumala (Father God) or Herra Jumala (Lord God).

The Sikhs often use 'Nâm' (the Name) for the one and only God. Another popular name among them is 'Wahiguru', meaning Wonderful Lord.

Writing the names of the thousands of Hindu gods would probably require several days. A collective word for gods in general in Sanskrit is deva; dev in Hindi - but a daiwa in Persian is a demon.

And then there are separate Greek gods, Scandinavian gods, gods in native religions... I could give you scores of those without opening a book (yes, I study Comparative Religion as well as languages), but I'll spare you.

No, Gerani,

A deva is unmistakeably a god. So says Panini (iii,3,120) and so is the meaning in RV ii.3.15,5 etc. etc.

And you mention some which I think are not generally regarded as full gods: Yudhistira and the Pandavas (although their father was a god), the gandharvas (celestial musicians), apsaras (wives of the gandharvas), yakshas (semi-divine beings, attendants of Kubera). What surprised me most was your mentioning of Ragas. Music can be heavenly, but I have never seen the personified râgs (Ragas/Raginis) referred to as gods.

hmm... i thought deva meant demi god. like a lesser god. like the opposite of a demon. but your right. lol.

the pandavas and gandharvas are godlike groups. the pandavas (after they died) were exhalted as gods once they entered heaven.

A typical mythical origin myth, almost a representative one of the genre runs as follows. The divine sage Narada was a great traveler and he loved to sing lustily as he went along his merry path. One day he came upon a group of extraordinary beings in a forest who were severely wounded and writhing in pain, that seemed to be coming to them in continual jolts. The aghast rishi stopped to help these beings in torment, whereupon they seemed to be in even greater extremities. Enquiry revealed the mortifying truth. These beings were in continual pain because of Narada's non-stop warbling! They were the souls of the ragas he was blithely mangling with his inept rendition, and because he was a divine rishi, the torment caused was actually physically torturing them. He promised on the spot to never again sing until he had mastered the correct procedures, as well as taken up some voice modulation presumably. However, the immediate objective was to restore these poor suffering ragas to health.

this little myth personifies the ragas or ragams.

did i mention ganga too?

theres also the 7 planets. bhoomi devi being the earth.

wow anders, you seem soo well knowledgable about this!
