hey,

I'm currently on Nationstates.net as "Laikagrad". My nation is currently rated an "inoffensive centrist democracy" and is in the Top 5% "most average"- which sort of feels like an insult.

It's something I do just to take my mind off stuff and it's occassionally a bit of fun for an absurd take on Politics. I'm wondering if anyone else on RF is on there?

Is it fun? How much does it cost? I've been toying with the idea of getting involved in a strategy game, provided it doesn't cost much or take up too much of the valuable time I could otherwise spend admiring myself in the mirror,

I wouldn't want to take you away from something as important as your mirror time. :D It is free and the "fun" of it is really in the mild political humour- sort of a study in a "unintended consequences". its not a challange of anything so calling "strategy" would be excessive. you basically get to make a few decisions a day and that changes it's variables, so not very taxing.

A lot of online games are pay to win , full of cheats multi accounts etc . Depending on your PC I think is best value for money to buy the actual game on CD and play on a level playing field .
A browser strategy game eg Desert Operations to get anywhere be prepared to spend hundred of $ , when reality is can buy a PC with several titles for the same money .
Sid Meier is a genius in his genre RTS for PC.

Not RTS, turn-based strategy. I did find NS thru looking for a Civ alternative when my CD-ROM didn't work on my computer, but it's not really similar at all.

anyways this is my nation: https://nationstates.net/nation=meryuma I'm a pretty major forum poster but I barely ever pay attention to the actual game anymore.
Online turns flipped at the end of a prescribed time , is way to much to do in civ in real time .
Could spend the whole day to make one turn.
Played loads of non turn based RTS games online
Try not to do so much gaming these days just swallows time , however if I had all the time in the world I'd be gaming right now .

It's amusing, but I wouldn't say fun. If you have a few minutes to kill, it's a good way to pass them.

I think I should have made my state's slogan "Friedman Milton can suck it!" rather a shortened version of from each according their abilities, to each according to their needs. My state is a "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise," I have excellent civil freedoms, my economy is improving (it's went from poor, to something else, up to a current standing of fragile), there is no "rich and poor," and private enterprise is illegal, and my state-owned book publishers are the backbone of the economy (and, for some reason, it's aided by basket weaving and soda sells).

I played nationstates many years ago. My country was "Glorious Heathengrad", which according to the game itself, was a "libertarian police state" with a strong economy. I remember the NS forum community being extremely anti American (this was during the Bush years). Not just anti American government/military, but anti American anything. Even our style of electric sockets were ridiculed.

That still sounds better than what the forums are like now...

What does it mean, and what exactly did you do, do have a welfare system that resembles a video game?

it means that my hopes to build a corporate police state have been crushed! :(

There is a rough guideline for what each catagory is here: http://nationstates.wikia.com/wiki/UN_Category

Inoffensive centrist democracy: Where the people have a good mix of political and civil rights as well as security. Obviously most centrist of the UN Categories as well as the most common.Generic' or 'classic' form of government in which there is a head of government and the citizens share some of the power in the ruling of the people. "Citizens have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often."

I caught a glimpse of not necessarily anti-American, but a glimpse into why it there is the appeal to an anti/un-American crowd in the game itself. In an issue, that didn't involve a humorous "well-lubed cliff of a slippery slope outcome," did involve a teacher being fired because he's homosexual. My action was to declare it an example of the harm religion does to society, told the religious right people to shut the hell up, and did everything the GLBT advocate said, which stuff I agree with anyways, in that our society should be one that accepts everyone as they are. And I unlocked a postcard of a beautiful scene of an oriental castle built into cliff of a side of the mountain and a bunch of trees all around it, and the reason for unlocking it is having a society that demonstrates religious tolerance. Which of course not having people go on about heaven and hell, sin and punishment, and why everybody is wrong would make it easier to teach tolerance, it caught my attention because you're typical pro-American patriot around here is also very typical pro-Christian (and, often time, pro-social conservative as well).
