Need Advice!

I am on the edge of being published, and I've got a dilemma. Up until now, I've used a pen name for many of my unpublished or web-published writing projects. I've used it for a number of different reasons, chiefly being the need to distance myself from criticism. That may seem strange, but I have social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and while my condition is now mostly under control, I still have severe anxiety episodes and panic attacks. About a week ago I had a severe anxiety episodes, and it started with reading someone's criticisms of a fellow author.

On the other hand, a great deal of coping with social phobia is in not giving it place in my life. My journey into control of my condition included the milestones of no longer making decisions based on my phobias, and finally ceasing to define myself in terms of my condition. Discarding old crutches like my pen name are part of remaining in control of my episodes.

There are other reasons for and against, of course: several people who like my work have suggested I keep the pen name for privacy's sake after my work becomes more well known. Privacy is an issue for everyone, regardless of any anxiety disorders. Others have said they like the ring of my pen name more than my given name. I can't argue; that's part of why I picked it!

On the other hand, many people who are interested in my work--especially acquaintances of my parents and friends of friends--are not aware of my pen name, and when they ask about my book, we'll have to tell or remind them that it's not under my name. This also means that no one who knows me will just pick my book up off the shelf because they saw my name, and when they show other people my book, they'll have to say, "Yes, that's really him, he just wrote under another name."

I suppose it would be possible to discuss this without actually knowing the names, but for the sake of comparison I'll reveal them. Some of you know my real name, and it's possible to find here on the site, but I'd like to hear which you like better before you know which is which.

So what should it be? "Leyshon Campbell" or "Matthew Barrett"?

Well, Leyshon Campbell has a ring to it, but I would go with your given name regardless of which is which. Just my opinion.

First, I would like to say congratulations.

If your anxiety is that bad, you should go with your pen name. You can always tell friends and family what it is. But one thing with pen names, people do have a way a figuring out who it really is. But if its your first book, you might not have to worry about that many people finding out.

Tough call...

I find myself drawn towards using "NetDoc" more and more mostly because it is more contorversial than my real name. :D

So I have to ask... what name does your HEART say you should use?

There is nothing wrong with using a pen name...I'm not an expert on the topic but didn't most good authors use pen names so that when they got reviews they heard the truth about the work instead of prejudices on the author? Also, congrats on your book...I also have a panic attack disorder so I can really relate to that...Do what makes you feel comfortable. If a talk show wants to interview you they will find out who you are and then everyone will know anyway so I don't see why a pen name would make a huge difference. You've taken such a huge step...don't do anything that might sabbatoge your progress.

JMPO...good luck:)

You could have a pen name that's your real first name and a fake last name...but I agree that you should go with whatever one feels better to you. Or maybe you should just change your name to be the same as your pen name, since you like it so much? :)

I think you should go with the latter name. the first name is weird (though I think it is a pretty good name) and I always thought authors with weird names were just being weird and egotistical. Also, I have a certain liking of the name Matthew anyway. (and if the former is your real name, I say once again, it is a good name, just not attached to any sort of work.)

You may not believe this DS , but my given name is not kreeden . ;) Although the son of a friend calls me " Uncle Kreeden " . :)

My point being that there is nothing wrong with a pen name , if you like it . Kreeden is the only name I have ever given myself . I answer it in life as readily as the name my parents gave me . So if you like your pen name , use it . But don't hide it . :)

Oh I really like "Matthew Barrett". It sounds so sophisticated to me...I don't know why.:sarcastic
It just has a great sound to it...."Hey, have you read Matthew Barrett's latest?". Yep, I like that one! ;)

I agree with NetDoc. You have to go with what your comfortable with, or just accustomed to. I've been called Luke or Wolf for so long it sounds wierd when someone calls me by my real name.
If you do go with your pen name, be ready to be refered to by that name. Possible on a constant basis. More people will notice than you'll think.
